Hi all.   I am really new to this site and first post.  I was happy to see a question about Zonegran.  My daughter, now age 14, has been on topamax for 3 years for absence sz.  She went from very high A averages in school to mediocre Bs.  We were never sure if it was totally topamax or mix of adolescence.

This year the dr decided to add Keppra because I was seeing a few blinks.  It didn't work for her.  She told me after a couploe of weeks she couldn't read anything and tell you what she'd just read.  We adjusted the med to various doses and combinations.  She went to 60 or more sz per hour by the time we did our first video eeg.

Tried Depakote - still about 60 or more sz per hour.  Horrible damage to grades for a new high school student.  Now I see how much memory loss, brain fog and concentration problem she was having due to the topamax.  Alsoi have a fear that the topamax caused some of the blinking.  (when we first diagnosed blinking was the symptom we were to monitor - could it be that instead of learning to catch them as we increased the med dose, the med was causing the blinks?)

In October we started adding Zonegran.  We have just gone to 200 mg at night and still take some topamax but trying to reduce it to lowest level we can get away with.  The addition of the Zonegran seems to have minimized the brain fog of the topamax.  She is still not back to 100% on but is so much sharper than before.

Based on this I agree with the post that says every individual responds differently to each med.  I read about people that think topamax has been a life saver for them as well as all the other drugs that we just couldn't tolerate.  The sedation side affect is just too much for her.

Good luck if you try it!

I take 200 mg of Zonegran and 200 mg of Carbamazepine 2x a day. I was on Topamax and we called it my stupid pill because it would make me feel like I was losing my intelligence. I would start acting like a little kid. I was taking 2 antidepressants at the same time and they made me tired all the time. I tried Depakote- I am allergic to it.The 2 meds that I take do not control my seizures completely, but I am willing to accept the jerks and aura's, and others as long as I don't lose conscious again. At my next appt we may increase my meds, but if not I will just put up with my little quirks.
