Dry Electrode Headset EEG

In April 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Zeto, Inc.'s "dry electrode" EEG (electroencephalogram) headset and its software platform for clinical use.

  • The Zeto headset, called zEEG, is easy to wear and does not need any preparation.
  • The EEG data collected from the headset is sent wirelessly to a cloud platform. This means the EEG is sent and stored using the internet.
  • The doctor or health care provider reading the EEG can view it live and read or interpret what the EEG means very quckily.
  • The dry electrode headset gives accurate 10-20 EEG placement and records EEG data consistent with the typical EEG.

“This approval is particularly meaningful to the Epilepsy Foundation, since the Zeto EEG system was selected as a prize winner in the 2016 Epilepsy Foundation Shark Tank. It was also awarded a New Therapy Commercialization Grant in 2017,” said Jacqueline French MD, chief scientific officer of the Epilepsy Foundation and professor of neurology, NYU Langone Health’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. “We saw a great potential for the EEG, an old diagnostic technique, to take a great leap into the modern age, making it more accessible for diagnosis of epilepsy.”

Zeto’s EEG provides a comfortable and wireless way to record a person’s brainwaves or EEG.

  • The zEEG headset can be placed on a person’s head to record electrical activity from the brain without wires or glue. That’s why this called a dry electrode headset.
  • It’s comfortable to wear and can be worn for a few hours at a time if needed.
  • It can be used in an office, clinic, or hospital setting. It is not available for home use yet.
  • It can be set up quickly too by a healthcare professional.
  • The headset can be adjusted to fit children and adults. It has been tested and fits well on people 4 years and older.
  • The headset cleans easily and can be re-used.
  • It can be used for any reason a regular EEG is done.
  • Since it is quicker and easier to set up, it can be used when an EEG needs to be recorded quickly.
  • It can also be used for a routine EEG or a test that lasts longer than an hour.

The Zeto headset comes with software that gets the information to the doctors quickly.

  • Data is immediately sent to a secure cloud platform.
  • The doctor can use a mobile app to view the EEG in real time from a remote or different location. You don’t need to be at the doctor’s office to have him or her read the results..

EEG is the most common and important test to diagnose seizures and epilepsy. Since 1924, getting an EEG in the hospital has not really changed. A trained technician measures the head, sorts through hair, and marks where the EEG wires or electrodes need to be placed. Then paste or glue is used to attach the EEG wires to the scalp. The wires are then connected to a box or machine where the data is recorded. The procedure takes up to 1 hour and can be a bit messy, depending on the type of paste used. It’s also hard for some people to lie still during the test or wear the electrodes and wires on their head.

The Zeto system is designed to make the EEG process a lot easier and quicker. The hope is to make EEG testing available to more people.
