I think your daughter should tell the Dr. right away.  I think Hives is an allergic reaction to the med.

I am on Zonegran- it's doing little for my seizures and it has made my memory horrible.  I am going to get off of it as soon as possible.  I just feel helpless.  I was seizure free for 7 years on Tegretol, but my neurologist put me on Zonegran because I am in my "childbearing years".  I did very well on Tegretol and would like to go back on it- but of course I want to have a healthy child.

When my husband and I decided to have a child(ren), I talked to my ob/gyn and my neuro, while living in a different city. At the time that I was contemplating having kids, I was on dilantin and phenobarbital. I started taking folic acid and a multivitamin daily. I was on dilantin and phenobarbital for many years and therefore able to handle the side effects. Since moving to where I live now, I started going to a different neuro that put me on zonegran, because dilantin and pheno stopped working. I disliked being on zonegran. I felt like I was in my own "zone". It caused memory problems, lack of concentration, problems with speech, etc. I'm now on keppra and lamictal and doing great. Also, because of the memory problems, it was creating problems in my marriage. I think that was because I didn't realize that zonegran was causing all these side effects. Which in turn made be kind of crabby. When I went to my doctor and told him what was happening his response was "I hope you're not witchy on Christmas day". (I have since found a new neuro.)If I were you, I'd do my research on all meds and find out what the side effects are and also find out what the neuros out there suggest. Be sure to find a neuro that isn't just "full of himself", is compassionate and cares about his patients.Good luck and God bless! (Oh, by the way, I now have 3 kids. So there is hope.) ;)Keri
