Need help getting 2 yr old to take Zonegran

Wed, 08/30/2006 - 23:09
Hi, My 2 yr old son was prescribed Zonegran, which apparently only comes in capsule form. I've tried opening them and mixing the powder in foods and drinks, but he won't touch anything we've mixed it in. Swallowing the caps whole is not an option for him and the powder is very bitter and hard to camouflage. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how I can get the med into him? The neurologist has been less than helpful on this issue. Thanks! Nicole

Nicole, first off if the neurologist isnt helping you with this and is just saying i dont know just get the meds in him. then i'd fine another doctor. one with a bit more bed side manor. i've used this on my kids and my dog,,, before bed time i would take the pill and crush it up or if its a capsul i would sprinkle it on a half sandwich of peanut butter. the PB takes the tast away, no bitter taste and pill(s) are down the hatch. hope it helpls scott

I have a three year old who needs to take her meds twice a day and at night time she needs to take three and a half pills. I crush them in one of those pill crushers that you buy at the drug store and then put it in a small glass. I pour a tiny bit of orange juice and mix it till the pills are disolved. Then I use a children's syringe that you can get at the pharmacy. I squirt it right into her mouth and she swallows it right away. She has an eating disorder so it was hard to get her to eat anything let alone if it tastes bad. At least this way she didn't have a chance to spit it out. Hope that helps!
