Need help getting 2 yr old to take Zonegran

Wed, 08/30/2006 - 23:09
Hi, My 2 yr old son was prescribed Zonegran, which apparently only comes in capsule form. I've tried opening them and mixing the powder in foods and drinks, but he won't touch anything we've mixed it in. Swallowing the caps whole is not an option for him and the powder is very bitter and hard to camouflage. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how I can get the med into him? The neurologist has been less than helpful on this issue. Thanks! Nicole

Hello, my son (who is 3)is on the topomax sprinkles and I have the same problems, I have put them in, yogurt, ice cream, pudding, applesauce, Mixed it in his ketchup for dinner, I know it says not to have them chew them up in the food, but I even tried inside laffytaffy, tootsie rolls, taking oreos apart and putting the prinkles in the filling, I cut marshmallows in half put in the sprinkles and then stuck the mallow back together. Everything works for a little while and then he catches on and I have to find something new. You are not alone in this! I really wish there was an easier way, why cant they make meds that taste good? Hang in there! and let me know if you find an easier way! Arika

I dont know if this will help but my 13 year old used to get terrible car sickness,,,so every time he got in the car he needed gravel,,,also every time he had a fever ,,,childrens tynol,,anything with pills,,,when we tried to get him to take them chewable or not he would promptly thow up....so i started mashing the pill and mixing it with a tablespoon full of maple syrup,,,had a glass of juice on hand for him to drink afterward..took a few trys but it did work,,,we had to use this trick with him from the age 2 until age 10 (smile) i think by that time he just liked the maple syrup myself...
