living with it

At first i thought that i was crazy, but i came to this site and i almost cried because everything is true.  But is it possible to have both absence and complex partial epilepsy?  Is it possible to have several types at once?

I just stare, and sometimes i almost drool.  but with me, i am sort of aware of everything that goes on.  i hear things, but i can't respond, like my whole being does'nt have the energy to respond, so i sort of can't move.  but on  a few occassions, i started to rock back and forth.  I thought that i was crazy because my doctors gave me an EEG, but nothing was abnormal.  But they said that it may have been that i just wasn't having a seizure at that time.  My head tips most times rolls to my left and my eyes roll up and to the left also.  If i'm standing, i do feel weak, but i haven't fell yet.  I mostly just stand there until it passes.  But the bad ones, fortunatley, have only happened while sitting.  But mostly i feel that i will have one soon, usually in the morning,  I feel wierd.  I can;t concentrate.  my thoughts are sometimes confused.  I rememeber one time all of a sudden my brain felt like every neruon was turned on and on fire.  It was like i was thinking of everything and nothing at the same time.  my thoughts were at hyper-drive, and then i had this irresistable urge to take off running as fast as i could.  i don't know what that was, but it was before my diagnosis.  i am so glad that i found this site, because i have longed to just talk to people who understand what i go through, and it is also very reassuring that i am not crazy.

I have two types, I have absences that become generalized in one temporal lobe, and generalized in the other. When one sparks up i look like i'm daydreaming, after about a minute i may or may not bounce the floor. The other one always bounces the floor, and is pretty ugly to look at. On three occasions this year both sparked up and put me in a confused state for about a month. Both spark ups at once always comes with bowl bladder release, and a squirt with the jungle juice to bring me out (don't ask).  Those are the ones that i'm petrified of, and i'm talking fear with a capital F, I get a ten second warning and wet myself during the aura because of that fear. I have a deap routed fear that one of these damned doubles will kill me in the end

Something struck me in your comments re: stemming a seizure. My husband suffers from seizures ..... usually the 30 secs - 1 minute 'space out' kind that happen maybe once or twice a month. We are Californians and this year I finally talked my husband, his neuro's and gp's into giving him a recommendation for a certain medicinal herb. This is after years of trial and error with a myriad of pharmaceutical drugs. It amazed me to watch as he took 2 drops of the tincture orally just as he was about to succumb to a seizure....within a minute or two he was back to his normal self.I only wish this option had been available when he had his last Grand Mal. I can't tell you how terrifying it was to watch the ER docs mainline liquid Atavin and Dilantin into him (he seized from 11:00 p.m. to 1:45 a.m.) with no effect. Unfortunately, there is no definitive diagnosis for him as every test that he has had (blood, urinalysis, EEG, Catscan, MRI, you name it) comes back normal! And frustrating for the clinicians when it comes to prescriptions....It must be terribly difficult to prescribe medicines when there is no diagnosis that anyone can agree on.Mother nature has blessed us with healing gifts from her own medicine cabinet for which we are most grateful. I have hope that there is a chance for a close to normal life again.

Hi Ash...

I read your post and thought, "GEE....did I WRITE THIS???"  You express JUST the way I feel!  I too have felt maybe I WAS going crazy!

ALSO...I read what epilispymd wrote to you about it being doubtful that you could have both complex partial and absence seizures both.  Well...that may be true, however, if that be.....then I believe you and I both are in that 1% that does!!!

I have had about 5 or 6 EEG and ALL have come back normal and I still have seizures.  My dr. says that about 40% of seizure disorders patients have normal EEG's.  He says that that just makes it harder to pinpoint the area that the seizures are coming from.  ALSO...he says that in about 60% of the cases...you NEVER find a cause for the seizures....something just short curcuits up there and BAM.....seizures develop!!

I hope it helps you to know that you are not alone.  It sure helped me when I found this site a year or so ago.

Oh yeah....my background.....I'm 48 years old retired public school teacher. (Retired this last year BECAUSE of seizures.  I had 2 in the classroom last year.  NOT GOOD! ALso, that was my 25 year to teach and I was eligable for retirement anyway but I DID plan to work until both my kids where out of college.  Daughter likes 1 more year and my son is just starting his 2nd year....so those plans didn't quite pan out!)

I started having seizures only 4 years ago.  No known reason or cause....just one day.....Grand Mal seizure from nowhere!  After extensive testing.....couldn't find any reason.  I was put on a mild seizure medication however had another grand Mal (or complex partial) a month later.  Since that time....I have tried about 8 different seizure drugs and nothing seems to work long term.  I have went as long as 7 months seizure free then they just return out of nowhere.  Then...change meds again and repeat the cycle.  Soooooo...there ya go!  At this time....I am having approximately 1 or 2 complex partials per month....taking Triliptal 1200mg per day and Lamactal 300mg per day.  As far as the absence seizures...these meds seem to be controling those.

WHEEEE....didn't mean to write you a book!  I just wanted you to know that you are NOT alone.  Write to me anytime!
