Has anyone had success with medication

Mon, 01/23/2006 - 18:18
My son is 15 and just started Lamictal. (First med treatment/started seizures approx 1 month ago) I have been reading a lot re: Lamictal and Epilepsy online and have not run across anyone stating they are on meds and in control of their seizures. Are there any success stories? Thanks, Kelley

Hi Kelly I do know of a male friend when I was on a training course where his seizures were controlled by him taking Tegretol. I haven't seen him for a few years so I don't know how he is now. When your son finds the right meds that suits his seizure type he will get better and be able to lead a normal life as possible even if he only then still has small ones. The only thing he wouldn't be able to do is drive. He would still be able to go to University and get a qualification just like any other normal child. If I was able to go to college with epilepsy and get all my qualifications then so can your son. He will have to be determined in life to succeed and show other people even though he may have epilepsy that he never allowed epilepsy from beating him and with time it will build up his confidence too. It may take him a little longer to get there but with your support I am sure he will in the end. There are hundreds of famous people with epilepsy too. Please give your son all the support he needs and definately don't stop him from adventuring in life because that can be damaging for the child and build resentment. All the best Teri

Hi Leslie Part of my previous posting about Uni was for your worry about your son going to Uni or anyone else too.

I am brand new to this site and can sure relate to you all! My 15 yr old son was diagnosed 2 weeks ago after having a grand mal seizure. Both the EEG and MRI showed seizure activity and led the neurologist to believe that he has had epilepsy since birth. LOts more to the story for another time, but I also am fearful when I know my son is out or alone at home. Danny is a very independant teen and determined to live his life, epilepsy or not. He made several steps on his own - he told his circle of friends about it and explained what a grand mal looks like as well as the other types of seizures he has, and told them what to do for him should he seize. They all have my phone numbers and know to call 911 as well. Then, we typed up a card for his wallet with his name, age and that he is epileptic. We typed simple instructions (turn me on my side, do not put anything in my mouth), all my phone #'s and my husbands, the doctor's name and phone and we listed his meds and their dosages. I know that this cannot prevent a problem, but it did give me some peace of mind. He is on Tegretol and has been seizure free for a week. He also has the seizures where his arm or leg will go numb or tingle or he will tremble for a few minutes. It has been incredibly hard for me to let him out the door, but I feel like I have to let him go on with his life, within reason. I too am nervous and get jittery especially if I hear him make a sound at night - I jump out of bed, certain he is having another seizure. It doesn't help that he is one of those those people that tosses and turns all night and will hit the wall with a leg or an arm and make noise! I am hoping that time will help the panic that I feel most of the day. This was such a shock to us and I am still absorbing it. So glad that I found this site and have other parents to talk to! Karen
