Has anyone had a child grow out of having IS?

Mon, 01/30/2006 - 09:30
My son has infantile spasms. He is on Topamax and Kolopin right now. We were told that there is still a chance that he may grow out of this condition. Could that be true? Has anyone ever "beaten" the seizures? Hoping for a brighter tomorrow.

My son was diagnosed with

My son was diagnosed with Infantile spasms at 5 months old and was started on ACTH for 1 week before the seizures stopped. he has not had a seizure since for 10 months now. The doctors seem to think that he would grow out of this asa well. He is doing good now but the doctors seem to think he may be a little delayed in some things. As his mom I think he is doing everything a child his age should be doing. I'm sure it will all work out. We look at everyday so precious to us...Keep believing in the faith that god will heal...

My daughter was diagnosed with infantile spasms at the age of 6 months. She was on phenobarb, tegretol and clonopin until ACTH. Her saving drug. She went 2 years seizure free after her ACTH treatments, until she had a grandmal at 3 years old. The EEG confirmed that she was also having petit mal. Three years have past. Even though she has rough days, I think she is a success. During the ACTH treatment, she did become delayed in a lot of areas. Provide your child with as much enrichment as possible. I have come to realize after all these years, we don't live from seizure to seizure, but live life to the fullest. It is quite funny but I am a special education teacher. Kathryn was tested at the beginning of kindergarten with a huge discrepancy in her language skills of larger than 20 points. I decided to tested her academics (being the special education teacher and concerned of the discrepancy). Surprisingly she scored in the high average to superior range for her age level. Every day is precious and fun with her. We don't coddle her or protect her. We are vigilant and encouraging. Good luck and keep the faith.
