Benign Rolandic Seizures

Wed, 03/15/2006 - 21:17
My son is 10 yrs old and was diagnosed with BRE in January. He had 2 seizures, had a neg. MRI. EEG showed BRE. I understand that most outgrow this? Anyone else have it, or did and outgrow it? He is on keppra and has not had a seizure since starting the meds. He keeps asking if he will have to take the meds forever. Thanks, J

Matthew has only ever had 2 and started meds and has never had another, in about 6 mo time. They said it was BRE, although he did not have them while he was sleeping. They were both during the day. The first one was not witnessed, he was scared to tell anyone at school. And a couple days later had one at home with his 14 yr old brother here. How did you know your son was haivng them? My sister also had BRE. She had almost all of her's at bedtime or in bed. She had them a long time before she ever told anyone. Then she had one that was witnessed, she said oh that happens all the time. And by the time she was 15 she had never had anymore. She was on meds, but is now 35. We have an appt. tomorrow with the neuro. Just a recheck. Good luck. Jonna

How old is your son? My daughter has Benign Occipital Childhood Epilepsy (BOCE). She is 5 and was diagnosed in March. Her seizures have occurred in her sleep. Because they were sleep related, our doctor said it was either BOCE or BRE. He decided BOCE for several reasons but I thought he indicated BRE only occured during sleep whereas BOCE, which is similiar to BRE can occur both in sleep and during the day. What are your child's seizures like? Does it involve feeling like he is going to throw up? Good luck on your recheck tomorrow. That truly is great that your child has not had one in 6 months. Our daughter had been on her meds for 5 months and had not had one until last week. It was quite a shock because things had been going so well. Her sleep patterns had been off because of the summer and when this occur, it lowers her threshold for seizures.

By the way, just to correct myself, actually with BRE, its not that they don't occur during the day but rather that it is much more common that the seizures occur during sleep.
