Benign Rolandic Seizures

Wed, 03/15/2006 - 21:17
My son is 10 yrs old and was diagnosed with BRE in January. He had 2 seizures, had a neg. MRI. EEG showed BRE. I understand that most outgrow this? Anyone else have it, or did and outgrow it? He is on keppra and has not had a seizure since starting the meds. He keeps asking if he will have to take the meds forever. Thanks, J

Hi there, my son is nearly 8 and was diagnosed with BRE Christmas just been.  His diagnosis was based on his EEG results, but the neurologist said actually his EEG results (spikes to the top left hand side) are not classic for BRE, and as he also has myoclonic jerks, has anyone else had a BRE diagnosis with Myoclonic jerks as well?  Most of his seizures have been as he goes off to sleep at night but he has also had small episodes during the day.  They have all started with his tongue and gone to other parts of his boday, and involve inability to talk, and drooling, they really really scare him.  He also gets sml bursts of blurred vision, and has experienced vertigo.

Jacobs behaviour, attitude and moods were terrible especially during the time he was having clusters of seizures.  He has been on his meds (tegretol) for about 6-8 weeks now and his seizures and his moods/behaviour have really improved.  But we do suspect his concentration level for schoolwork has slipped marginally.

We are really new to this and appeciate hearing others stories to gain as much info as possible.  It is very frightening for us and although it is getting easier to deal with, we are struggling.

hi all havnt been on dis 4 long time..my son is gone 9 years old..he was diagnosed in january 2006 and was on tegretol den moved onto lamicatal..he takes 400 mgs daily which isnt a massive dose..he was diagnosed wit BRE but has simple and complex partical tendencies...he had problems with his right eye and pins and needles but ive noticed lately he gets very anxious especially at night time..take last night 4 an example, it was late getting him asleep cos he was all confused and upset, saying he had a nightmare a few nights ago and cudnt stop thinking of it..it really got him upset an took me ages 2 settle him..hes also started waking up during the night shouting a screaming an can sleep walk alot which i thought was strange 4 a child of his age..hes very moody lately an seems switched off..we had him at a child physcologist(referred to by his neuro doc)they cudnt say what it was, maybe he was just an anxious child but i personally think its either his meds r his seizures..he had a really bad one bout 2 months ago, he was in school and his eyes rolled back in his head..he was only after going up on his meds an his doc said he didnt want him going up again cos it was probly only a once off..im just a bit confused myself..is this my sons personality or could his epilepsy be partly 2 blame..any feedback on this i would appreciate..i was also told he would grow out of it but there was never an age thing mentioned..15 is a long way away

My son is now almost 9 and has had 6 seizures since Dec. 2003. The last 3 being recently within a 2 1/2 week period. We have been told that he has BRE but his EEG is not classic for it. He only has had them in his sleep and they have been within the first 20 minute of falling asleep. So far we are not on medications but we have been told that children usually grow out of this by adolescents.
