Andrews/Reiter Institute

Sun, 03/29/2009 - 16:16
I stumbled across this website for the Andrews/Reiter Institute in California, where they claim an amazing success rate for stopping seizures without drugs. It almost sounds to good to be true, and I can't find anyone who has any experience with them. It seems like with a success rate that high they would be front page news in the world of Epilepsy, but none of the Dr.s , nurses, or other people in our support group has ever heard of them. If anyone reading this has any experience with them, please respond. There are alot of us out here that are extremely interested. Thanks for your help.

I had a very bad experience in this program and feel I wasted several thousand dollars. I am happy to discuss this offline if anyone wants another perspective. The "research" is not based on the scientific method, but rather on individual cases they have chosen to publicize.

In this program I was expected to convince myself that I could control seizures with my mind, and I was instructed to have treatment sessions in a hotel room where techniques such as working with chakra energy points were used.  While I have no problem with alternative views on health, seizures are very serious health issue, and should be treated accordingly.  When I was not able to find the treatment helpful, there was a tone of noncompliance directed towards me. Also, in one therapy session, the therapist actually began crying about her daughter's problems when she was supposed to be helping "me".

When prepaying the steep bill for all this, the therapist told me my husband could get an IQ test for a special rate, (while she was giving me one). This was an odd suggestion, that appeared to me, as a way to profit for an unneccessary test.

This program postponed my recovery, and caused me a lot of unnessary emotional anxiety and self-blame.  It was like someone blaming you for causing your own cancer. Perhaps this program works for some people, but I'm not sure what the conditions are.  Before you pay several thousand dollars for this program, I think it's important to hear all views.

Your experience sounds just like mine, however I was too skeptical to actually follow through.  She wanted me to buy her a round trip ticket from Santa Barbara to Miami, fl., pay for a one week stay in a hotel and a fee of over $5,000 for a one week conseling session with my son. He only had seizures for about one year at the time so we were still  fairly inexperienced when it came to all the options and treatments available. When I spoke to her it was clear that she knows a lot about epilepsy, and her program might be effective on some people who suffer from stress related seizures. However, in my son's case he has scar tissue as a result of having encephalitis. His seizures occur while doing everthing you would normally do during a day and seem to be more consistent with the time of day than anything else. One of the things I have learned about epilepsy is that everyone is a unique case and responds to different drugs and treatment. We're going to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio in October for intense testing and an evaluation to see if they can help him out.

Good luck to you and sorry you got taken.

I had exactly the same experience, and we did pay for her RT ticket and hotel.  After 5 minutes with her, I knew she was not the real deal.

Since then, my wife had brain surgery and her seizures are 100% controlled.  However, she suffered so much damage in the years that Andrews consulted with her that there is not much left of her congnative ability.  I blame Andrews for that.

I encourage people, IMHO, to avoid this kind of snake oil approach and seek real medical help.  It is there and highly developed.
