What are the odd? A Trileptol question...

Thu, 07/13/2006 - 13:24
My son is currently on 7 ml twice daily of Trileptol. We use the syringe that comes with the bottle and rinse it after every use. My son has had several seizures in the last week which is very unusual. My wife had a thought that sometimes when she gives him medicine there is a bit of water in the tip of the syringe. She draws the medicine back and then pushes forward to 7 ml which could in effect be putting water back into the medication in the bottle. Does anyone think it is possible that over the course of a couple of weeks that this would dilute the medicine enough to make it ineffective? I would call the neuro, but it is near impossible to get ahold of him and I don't want to take him away from real emergencies.

Be sure your dr. is checking liver enzymes while your child is on Trileptal.  Ours did not and our daughter nearly went into liver failure while he kept telling us "it's just a virus".  Funny thing is he works at one of the leading hospitals in childhood epilepsy in the world.  I guess BRE was not severe enough for him to take much interest in our case.

Neadless to say, we have a new neurologist.  We are scared to death to try any new meds and now have only two options, since most proces through the liver.  We are looking into trying Keppra but are concerned about the side effects.

My daughter takes a total of 3ml of Trileptal per day and we too use the syringe. We give the medication to her in her juice, milk, etc. So I don't think the water would make a difference. If you have concerns then you should call the Nuero until you reach him. As far as not calling him because it will take away from "real" emergencies, I think your child having a seizure in my opionion is an emergency enough for him to be notified. Good luck! kksmom

Most of this is my trying not to face the truth that we are going to have to try other medications. It really scares the hell out of me after reading all the horror stories that everyone posts on here regarding the other medications. My son has it so hard already, I wouldn't want to add more on top of it all. Thank you for your reply.
