What are the odd? A Trileptol question...

Thu, 07/13/2006 - 13:24
My son is currently on 7 ml twice daily of Trileptol. We use the syringe that comes with the bottle and rinse it after every use. My son has had several seizures in the last week which is very unusual. My wife had a thought that sometimes when she gives him medicine there is a bit of water in the tip of the syringe. She draws the medicine back and then pushes forward to 7 ml which could in effect be putting water back into the medication in the bottle. Does anyone think it is possible that over the course of a couple of weeks that this would dilute the medicine enough to make it ineffective? I would call the neuro, but it is near impossible to get ahold of him and I don't want to take him away from real emergencies.

My Heart goes out to you. I know how you feel. I am still scared as hell myself after she is settled into bed. My little one was on phenobarbital before Trileptal. This is not easy by far but just know that this site is very supportive. Take deep breaths and have faith that there is a medication that will hopefully reduce the seizures and reduce the anxiety. I'm am here if you need to reach out. kksmom

My son took Trileptal for about 2 months. It was to replace Tegretol. He did really great at first, but then his seizures started increasing and he was falling & getting hurt more. I then learned he was having "Drop Attacks" (he had never had this type of seizure before) the last straw was when he broke his nose. It was the Trileptal that was causing this! You need to be aware that different meds in addition to all the side effect listed on the warning labels, that they can sometimes INCREASE or change your child's seizure type! My son was 20 months when his epilepsy started and is 7 1/2 now, so we've had plenty of experience with this. Also, when the dr. took him of the Trileptal, he just told us to switch it out with the Tegretol - same dosage. He had been on the Tegretol for 4 years and the 2 drugs are very similar, so we thought that would be fine. But by his 2nd dosage of the Tegretol, he became toxic and had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance, I didnt know what was wrong with him and was terrified. My point is - be aware, dont trust your doctor 100%, do lots & lots of reading.

It sounds like your child had hyponatremia(low sodium) like I did. Trileptal causes this low sodium is some people. I only had complex partial seizures and I ended up with a few generalized seizures. I just recently got off of it. But I dealt with it for years. I would only have this occur about once every four or five months. I started drinking gatorade(yuck)to help, or some salty things. Or when I felt I was having many auras that day, I new I was getting low on sodium. People have to realize that even when taking a high amounts of water can cause this problem even when you dont take trileptal. But trileptal has caused this problem in many people. take care Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/
