Exercise, Overheating and Seizures

Thu, 04/13/2006 - 20:23
Has anyone experienced they or their child having seizure activity increase while engaged in sports or physical activity or while being very hot from exercise? My 9 year old daughter has mostly complex partial seizures and has had about six including her one and only tonic clonic seizure while playing basketball. Her doctor says physical activity does not cause seizures but she has had so many when plyaing basketball that I find it difficult to believe it is just coincidence? Is harldy sweats and becomes overheated easily. Thanks for any help or insights you can give.

alismom, I was fifteen when started having seizures. Getting hot while playing sports or getting hot from the activity would always bring on seizures. And it still does 32 years later. Here's a link you may want to look at: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/epilepsy_childhoodabsence.html I hope this helps! -Spiz

Spiz, Thank you for the info! The article was interesting and I plan on bringing it up with Ali's neurologist. Are your seizures absence or complex? Thanks. alismom

Hi Trudy here I have two children with epilepsy. My son is very active and with him suffering with complex partial seizures i noticed that when he engaged in physical activity he would have an aura or seizure. This is brought on by his heavy breathing. The doc confirmed this. His meds are quite strong and keep him seizure free for many days but one game of football and a seizure will always surface. Hope this helps.
