Exercise, Overheating and Seizures

Thu, 04/13/2006 - 20:23
Has anyone experienced they or their child having seizure activity increase while engaged in sports or physical activity or while being very hot from exercise? My 9 year old daughter has mostly complex partial seizures and has had about six including her one and only tonic clonic seizure while playing basketball. Her doctor says physical activity does not cause seizures but she has had so many when plyaing basketball that I find it difficult to believe it is just coincidence? Is harldy sweats and becomes overheated easily. Thanks for any help or insights you can give.

alismom, I have both types of seizures. What I go by to try to make my own judgement call on what just occured is that after an absence seizure - I'm alert and looking around to see if anyone noticed anything. It's hard making judgement calls on a type of seizure you've had and not have the awareness it even happened until after the fact...but the absence seizure, to me anyway, is the easiest of this type for me to be sure of. Here's a link on the two: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/seizure_complexpartial.html Hope this helps! -Spiz

Hi Trudy, JusT wondering how old your children are? I have a 9 yr. old with complex partial sz. It is so hard as a mom to watch him play basketball or soccer knowing he might have a sz. It kills me to see him have one while playing, but most of the time, nobody notices. He just looks at us, then we give him a big smile, up, and he keeps going. We are just so proud of him to be out there playing. How does your child deal with it?Is he/she nervous beforehand? How do you deal with it? Thanks for your time Cheryl

Hi This is curious to me, I have a 16 year old boy, he loves basketball and weight training and I notice he becomes over tired and unfocused, than sleeps alot and seems ok. Advice seems to be let them do what they did before E which I try to do but gotta tell you makes me nervous when he seems so drifty. Question,Has anyone on depakote noticed a problem with their vision?
