Tegretol and Lamictal

Sat, 04/08/2006 - 13:05
My daughter is being weaned from Clobazam and Lamictal will be added as an add on to Tegretol. We are having behaviour issues now which we suspect might be in part to the clobazam. Can you give me your experiences with lamictal. Especially curious about effect on behavior and the dreaded rash.

Hi there. I just read your posting and I just wanted to add to it. My daughter is on Epilim ( 1500mg) and after having 3 seizures in 12 hours the other week and ending up in hospital for 3 days, the neuro on call introduced Clobazam (10mg) onto the Epilim. After she was home for about a week, she saw her usual neuro and he decided to withdraw the Clozabam and introduce Lamictal instead. So over the last 7 weeks, she has been decreasing the Clozabam slowly, whilst at the same time, introducing the Lamictal of 50mg per day. She has one week more to go before she will be on her new dose of Epilim 1000mg (instead of the 1500mg) and 50mg of the Lamictal. He wants to see how she will go with this mixture. She has shown no real signs of any behaviour change (except what comes with being a teenager!!!) She does however have trouble trying to remember little things now and then. She does have trouble with her school work, her spelling has gone down a bit, her concentration is a bit low and she finds her thoughts a bit muddled but other than this, she is doing Ok on the change. I hope her trouble with concentration etc will settle when she gets use to the new dose. No rash either. I think when it is introduced very slowly, there is less likely to be any problems with the rash side of things. Although I would still keep an eye out for it till she is saftely on her full dose. I hope this looooooong comment helps! Best wishes . Sandy

Hi My 6 year old son took Clobazam for a month. It made him very depressed, so we withdrew it. Lamictal has been much better for him - he has been on it for about 2 years and has no significant side effects from it and no rashes. It has not been effective enough alone for his seizure control tho. He has tried numerous combinations - Lamictal only; Tegretol, Topomax & Lamictal; Tegretol & Lamictal; Topomax & Lamictal; and currently, Lamictal, Topomax and Clonozepam. Clono was added at the begining of August & he currently has his best seizure control in 5 years!!! I am not holding my breath tho, we have had good results on other drugs, but it never lasts. Good luck to you & your daughter - the drugs affect everyone differently, so you never really know what to expect!

Hi. My son starting taking Lamictal alon with Tegretol years ago when he was about 8. It made him very tired in the beginning, and still did until he was weaned off it this year at age 13. He still takes Zonegran. He had no rash.
