How do parents ever sleep?

Sun, 01/28/2018 - 23:47
My son was diagnosed with epilepsy a few days ago. He is 19 months old. We had finally hit that point where we weren’t scared of SIDS and what not, he’s our third child, and we know all the do’s and dont’s. Then we were slapped with this diagnosis. For all of his seizures we have been near by, and they have happened during the day, but I think what happens if he is seizing at night, and there is no one there to help him if he needs it? I haven’t slept since we’ve been home from the hospital. I check on him all through the night. We’ve been parents for a while, but we’ve never been through anything like this. We’re absolutely terrified. Any suggestions on sleeping accommodations? How do you handle the stress of it all? Anything would be greatly appreciated. I’m just lost.... thanks in advance.

Thank you so much. I needed to hear that. It’s definit going to take time to adjust to, it’s just so scary. Watching your child have a seizure is terrifying, and there is nothing you can do to help them. We got him a monitor, it’s just still hard to imagine something horrifying happening in the middle of the night, and him not having anyone.

I understand. Thank you for

I understand. Thank you for your kind words. It’s scary, I just don’t want to lose him. Ugh...

It isn't easy for parents.

It isn't easy for parents. Try being diagnosed at 13 with no internet and no way to figure out what to do. I researched epilepsy in a library which had out dated books but it did have information that is still used today. The types of epilepsy and types of seizures have been changed do to neurologists specializations. I goy yired of them constantly questioning me about my meds and told them. But instead of asking me I saw one of them at times counting them. They learned just like I did. By learning how to deal with it when things come up. I never knew when I was going to have a seizure. No auras so they came and went and they learned how to take it a step at a time. Tests were done over a year after I had my grand mal. But I had 20-25 different EEG's that came back normal before the testing was done. So relax some and learn that people can go periods of time without any seizures. If most of the seizures happen during the day then that is generally going to be when they have them. As for me I do not think I have ever had one at night in the 5+ years I have had epilepsy.I hope this helps and I do know it is trying on many people.Joe
