grade retention issues

Looking for any parent who has had their child's school suggest holding a kid back a year, even when child has an IEP. I am in a battle to keep my son from pyschological harm of being held back. At the end of last year's IEP mtg., my son was reccommended to be placed in the spec. ed. room for reading, writing and math (most of the day) and then return to his reg. classroom for specials, SS, science, etc. Except school wanted him to go back to 1st grade instead of 2nd. Our point as parents is the harm of holding him back and my son hating school and dealing with all that goes with hating school forever. Our school district policy is the principal said it is up to him. Help needed with this.

I had to decide wiether or not to hold my daughter back.it was the hardest choice to make and not an easy one.I did deceide to hold her back.It was so hard and for along time I wasn't sure it was the right choice. It was also hard on my daughter. She is repeating kindergarden right now so she is on a different playground then her old friends are on.Now I know it was the right choice. For the first time she is ahead of most of her class instead of behind.I kept her with the same teachers and so she already new the routine and got to be there special helpers when school first started because she knew were everything was at and knew how they did things.I make sure she still gets to see her old friends to have play dates and now she has new friends.I did bring up in the IEP meeting that I will not hold her back agian though.I even asked if they planned on holding back every year because at that rate she will never be out of school.under the health and disablity act children with special needs have the right to stay with there peers.meaning that legaly they can't force you to make your child repeat a grade exspeciaaly if he is on an IEP.Talk to TASK(team of advocates for special kids)ask them to send you the parents rights and responbilitys book. Its free.#(866)828-8275.good luck.
