Sorry to hear what you are going through. You will find lots of support from people here. This beginning part can be so difficult figuring out what you are dealing with and how to manage it. Some simple tips on language - all epilepsy means is seizures that recur on their own, without specific cause. Medications are the first line of treatment in most situations. There are many different types of seizures - grand mal, also known as tonic-clonic, are just one type. Sometimes it is hard to tell what kind the person has unless they are witnessed and EEGs are recorded during them. Writing down your observations is very helpful - take your notes to each doctor's visit so he or she can see what is happening, what helps or what doesn't. Here's a link to information about seizure types and syndromes, as well as to a page for parents and families. Hope this gets you started and let us know how how things are going. www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/types_seizures.html www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/types_epilepsy.html www.epilepsy.com/info/family.html www.epilepsy.com/web/animation.php?swf=what_is Best wishes, Epilepsy.com Resource Specialist

Hi Ashley, sorry about ur daughter n hope she gets well soon. U have to realize that very many people are in your shoe, so ur not alone in this. Just b sure to folow ur doctors advice. My cousins baby of 2 years is right now addmited in hospital because of seizures. They r exactly like ur daughters, that right after a seizure, he stands and goes on like nothing has happened. Acceptance is the first step to helping your child, so i pray to God that you find peace. do a lot of reading and researche. That way, u will always be prepared for the next seizure. Hugs dear! Be still

Hi, I just wanted to give you a pat on the back and let you know that I know exactly what you are going through. When your child first starts having seizures, it's hard to except that you have to play a waiting game. As a parent, it is so URGENT that the situation be taken care of immediately. My son is 21 months old and had his first seizure when he was 11 months old. We thought it was just a febrile seizure, but then he started having more at night and then during the day. In any case, we are on our third med and are waiting to see the pediatric neurologist out of state (we don't have one here) in May. By then, his "seizure disorder" will have been going on for one year. It's hard to wait, but I find peace in talking to others in my same shoes! I just keep researching and hoping to find pathways that lead to somewhere. My son's case has his doctor scratching his head. He just doesn't know what to do. Through research, I found that metabolic disorders can cause seizures. This has proven "helpful" since we had his metabolic labs done and found some elevated orgainic acids, but still nothing that leads to something certain. Sleep disorders can also be assocaited with seizures. We are getting a sleep study done in April since my son's sleep issues are at best aggrivating his seizures. I wish you the best and hope that everything goes well!
