Assistance for New Parents dealing with a new reality

Tue, 10/31/2017 - 04:42
Our youngest daughter (13) recently had a seizure and was diagnosed shortly after with genetic epileptic with post pubescent onset. She currently is on a progression with her medication at 50mg 2xday lamotrogome (Lamictil). Which will increase to 100mg at a later date. She competes in Cheerleading and Lacrosse and the Nurologist said to keep doing what she had been doing. There have been a few issues, but she seemed to be able to tumble and continue her lifestyle. We had some issues when they were practicing for an event when she tumbled and the music was going, she became dizzy. She just started on the 50mg dosage. Our question is do we continue and just monitor her as she adjusts or is this something that could be more serious. Just want to know if other parents have had similar situations. Thanks for any information Tim & Kathryn

Hello! I had had epilepsy

Hello! I had had epilepsy since birth and have been on Lamictil for the past 8 years and good lord! It's been a godsend. I never realized how absolutely terrible I felt until started this. Heck, if I don't take it within 12 hours I start to get dizzy, cotton and heavy-headed, etc. I've had some dizziness, but that was because I needed to increase dosage, so she might be the same. As Amy mentioned, 50 mg is a starting dose, but I'd bring it up to her neurologist... I agree with the neurologist. Epilepsy won't stop life unless you let it and sports have always been a large part of mine. The added stress of a new med and the upcoming event could also be a factor and it depends on several factors (i.e. triggers.)  Long story short- just monitor her for now.
