Hello Laurie,
First of all, I am so glad to have stumbled across this site. I finally feel like I am not in my own little world.
I started having seizures in 1995 due to an A V malformation, and had to have surgery to correct it. The surgery left scar tissue on my brain which now causes me to have seizures. I noticed about a year ago that I started having short term memory loss. I improved my sleeping habits, tried to cut a little more stress out, and never miss a dose of my meds...anymore. I feel better now, but do from time to time still forget things.
As for the Tegretol, I was placed on that med right after my surgery, and it caused my heart rate to go through the roof one night. I eventually was placed on Depakote and Neurontin, and have had really good luck with them.

I was taking Topomax for almost a year and hade terrible memory loss this was mostly due to the medication. I have now been off of it for a week and can tell the difference.
My Dr. also teold me today that I may just be prone to the memory problems no matter what I am taking I really hope not because this has affected my ability to do the work I was doing before I started taking anything. I am now starting on 500mg. of Keppra and have upped the dose of my Tegretal from 400mg. to 800mg a day. I will let you know how this works.
THe topomax caused such sever memory loss that I cried everyday. I lost alot of friends over it and could not go back to work. I was forgetting to turn the stove off and often forgot important dates and appt. my husband would have to call me from work everyday to remind me of things I needed to do that day. I also had hair loss do to the drug. and speach problems. Sometimes I would blurt things out when talking to people and then felt so stupid because I knew that was not what I wanted to say. although it did help with the headaches, I would not want to take it again. I like you wanted my life back so you might want to talk to your Dr. about this.
hope things get better....
