Short Term Memory Loss

Tue, 09/21/2004 - 12:42
I would like to know if there are others who experience short term memory loss. I have been on miscellaneous meds for the past 12 years but currently taking Depakote ER & Tegretol XR.

Hi Laurie~~I experience meory problems every day. Some days are worse than others.Memory problems can be realted to BOTH the seizure activity, and the drugs being taken for them.My memory is partly due to the type of seizures I have, because they are in the temporal lobe in the area that has memory stored in it, I also have speech deficits, as well. The Tegretol shouldn't cause significant problems, but I would bet more on the Depakote. I take that as well. It can cauise sedation, sleepiness, lethargy, abnormal thinking, speech problems, hair loss, hair thinning, and hair texture changes.I have the hair loss, and hair texture change. But remember everyone reacts to drugs differently. The Tegretol (if I have the wrong drug here don't get mad, I can't remember it, memory problem) all but killed me whan I took it. I had to be removed and the drug changed to the Depakote ER.I also had Topamax as well, and that was doing nothing, so they took me off that.Nancy

Hi, I suffer from epilepsy and memory loss, the memory loss as a result of injuries during a couple of mike tyson specials. Trying to get to grips with it is hard and ever so frustrating, sometimes i can't cope, i want to scream. The worst part of it is the knowing you know but being unable to recall it, it drives me nuts. I spend my life completely frustrated, so much is "on the tip of my tongue", requiring an external prompt to bring it forward.  The times i've got into trouble over forgetting must be numerous, so numerous i remember some of them. One of the most evil things about memory loss is the global perception that states that memory loss equals mind of a child equals you need a keeper.

I want to be me again, i want to do the things i remember. I know it won't ever happen, but bloody hell, i want it ever so badly.

Hi to everyone who replied:

I am 41 years old, a wife, mom and speech pathologist. After 10 years of being seizure free I had a "doozy" in November followed by a flurry of partial complex into Dec. Since that time I have 1 or 2 per month. My short term memory is shot and I haven't been able to return to work. My family is very understanding about the fatigue and memory but as one of you said, I want my life back. No independence, "friends" backing away, etc. I'm going for my second VEEG early Sept to see if I'm a surgical candicate. The first  VEEG the didn't get enough information. I don't know if I should pray for brain surgery or not! I don't have any advice to give except to try to do something nice for yourself everyday. For me, it's taking a walk around the block alone!
