Sleep Apnea and Seizures

Wed, 08/29/2007 - 21:50
My husband has a seizure disorder. He was diagnosed with sleep apnea last year. He tried using the CPAP machine at night and struggled with it and gave up. He was diagnosed as SEVER SLEEP APNEA and suffered from lowered oxygen levels to 73% thru the night because of it. CAN SLEEP APNEA CAUSE HIM TO HAVE SEIZURES? His seizures are form head trauma 18 yrs ago...my concern is that is he making his epilepsy more complicated by the fatc that he has severe sleep apnea and refuses to do anything about it. Anyone else out there with sleep apnea and E.?

Hi - I was thought to have apnea while sleeping (only because I snore so loudly) but after spending a night at a sleep center, it was determined that I did not. My dentist had a small attachment that might be better. P.S. Adult onset idiopathic epilepsy that is more or less cured by surgery in 01. We keep our fingers crossed, but there are lingering effects - snoring may be one. Check the dentist. ciao

Anyone else out there with sleep apnea and E.? "A study done at the University of Michigan revealed that a third or more epilepsy patents also have sleep apnea. Anything that causes disturbed sleep also has an adverse effect on the brain. Sleep apnea does disrupt sleep and this causes excessive daytime sleepiness, an inability to concentrate and headaches. If, however, the person also has epilepsy, then the sleep disruption can bring on a seizure. The coexistence of epilepsy and apnea suggests a link between the parts of the brain that are affected by epilepsy and the parts that control breathing." Apnea and Epilepsy There are also several members of CWE that have been diagnosed with both epilepsy and sleep apnea and who's seizures diminished when they started using a CPAP. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Check out my chart of alternative epilepsy treatments.
