MEDICAL ALERT I.D.'s

Wed, 11/17/2004 - 14:25

HI I am wondering if anybody else has had the same problem as I am having. My Dr. has told me that I need to get some sort of Medical I.D. to wear. because as most of you know that when you have a seizure after you are unable to remember things that are important like where you are and how you got there. My problem is I have looked and look but everything I find is so exspensive. I want to register with the medical alert system which seems like the best way to go because my Dr. would be contacted right away but I can't afford a good bracelet. I don't want something cheep that I will have to replace everytime I turn around, but spending $500.00 is not something I can do.

is there anybody who can recomend a good place to buy a good medical I.D. bracelet or even just the charms?

    thank you for any help.

Both of my kids have the actual MedicAlert bracelets. They have the plain steel ones and we are almost coming up on 1 year. I have not had any problems getting them to wear the bracelets. They are 5 and 3, though, so they are used to mom getting her way! Anyway, one of my concerns with the beaded or charms on the bracelets was if the EMTs would even think twice to check a cutsie bracelet for medical tags. I haven't ever asked anyone but it was always a concern of mine...also, for younger kids...my son runs around pretending it is his Buz lightyear laser beam shotter...so to him it's a toy! I nver let them take them off except for bathtime (when I also wash the bracelets to free them of peanut butter and jelly!). The clasp on theirs is hard to unlatch (for the kids) so I like that they can't take them off on their own...the beaded ones I've looked at all have really simple clasps to undo. I know my son would be taking his off and on and lose it. We started with a bracelet bought from a jewelry store, but the phone number on the back was rubbed off within 6 months. The medic alert on hasn't even shown signs of wear! thought I'd throw in my story! (I think I will get the kids some nice silver or gold ones for times when they need to dress up like Bible class!)

Here are 2 places that provide good jewelry - at all different prices. You can get basic, fancy jewelry, or sportsbands. With both of these you can store health history with them so if it's needed in an emergency, it can be available... Using one of these is better than just buying one at a pharmacy - at least that is my personal opinion...

Hi all, While I was shopping for a medical alert bracelet for my son (8 years old), and came across Tottoos.org on the internet. I purchased them, and he loves them. It's not an "everyday" use solution, as it is a temporary tattoo decal, but I figure if he likes wearing it, it's worth it. The decals stayed on pretty much for up to a few days, and I had it say whatever I wanted. What's good is that it's not the tiny, tiny prints on the bracelets, but rather pretty large font. I feel better about it than other things I've tried. So, if you have a resistance child, this may be a solution for you, especially on trips or whenever he/she is not with you or someone who would know of the medical situation. good luck! Gwen
