Hi, my name is Kayla.  I had my first migraine headache when I was 7 years old.  I wasn't sure what is was; but, later I was told what it was.  My mom, grandma, and sister all have suffered with migraines.  I get them in clusters of a few headaches at a time, and then it may be another month before I have another one.  I am now 26, and I was diagnosed with Epilepsy in June of this year.  I have had quite a difficult time trying to find the right amount of medication to take in order to monitor my seizures.  I now take Trileptal 300mg 5 times a day, and I have been seizure free for a week!!  When I had my first seizure, I also had a very bad migraine headache earlier that day.  Since then, I have not had another migraine headache.  This is probably a record for me.  Does anyone know if seizure medication can also help reduce the occurance of migraine headaches?  Thanks a lot!

Kayla,

Glad you are on something that is working for your seizures and your migraines are subsiding.  There does seem to be a link between the mechanism of action of AEDs and migraines.  There are two seizure meds. that are currently indicated by the FDA for migraine prevention .  Depakote and Topamax.  Zonegran is currently being studied for the indication and is in Phase II trials.   Others, like yours, may also have this effect and be used "off label."   Good luck with your treatments!
