Zarontin

Fri, 10/06/2017 - 15:38
My son is 7, going on 8 and he's been taking Zarontin for almost three years. Of course we've seen side effects but I think i'm more worried about him slowing coming off the medication. He will be completely off Zarontin at the end of this current month. The process has been slow and so far I haven't noticed anything yet but i'm still nervous. Can someone relieve me of this anxiety?

I’m going to disagree with

I’m going to disagree with Joe here as I don’t think people can ‘calm down’ on command. That sounds completely patronizing to me. I think you have very normal fears. My child doesn’t have common absence but I have the same worries. My child has a good chance of having a type of epilepsy that she will grow out of, just with partials, atypical absence and myoclonics - partials still happen even with meds so we are at least a few years away from attempting to wean meds. You probably know all the reasons to do this, there’s a good chance he doesn’t need meds any longer. Is there an EEG set up for after he’ been off meds for a while? As our child’s atypical absence were becoming continuous on reduced meds at the five day EEG a few years ago, I may also be asking for a short EEG at the halfway point as it will take all summer to wean off the current med and thay way if there’s still activity, we could ramp back up before school - middle or high school by that time.
