Question about my boys

Fri, 01/20/2006 - 19:50
Hi, I was recently diagnosed with epilepsy. My seizures occur mainly in my sleep. But then I was told it could be hereditary. Anyone have experience with this? My oldest son had what we were told was Night Terrors. They were aweful. He'd run through the house screaming & crying, or lay down in the floor, curl up in a ball and cry. He finally stopped about age 12. My middle son has been tested for absence seizures and even though they didn't catch it happening, told me he could still be having them. They finally gave up & told me not to worry about it. But he is now 12 and still has boughts of being in his own little world at home & school. My youngest son, just this past month, has had 3 spells were, about an hour after laying down to sleep has come to me saying he felt funny, couldn't go to sleep and couldn't stop shaking all over. I thought he was just scared and sent him back to bed, but he didn't sleep much all night. The last time it happened I let him lay down with me and he shook so hard I couldn't hold him still. He kept saying, I can't stop, I can't stop. He was awake so I know it wasn't a night terror. I am very concerned. It is scary enough that I have to deal with being diagnosed with epilepsy and all that goes with it, but to think my boys may be at risk too is terrifying! Anybody that has any experience with this that could give some advice on how to go about discussing this with their Dr. or my Neurologist? Thanks! Amy

Hi Amy, I am sorry about you and your family. My mom's cousin, my sister her daughter and myself have epilepsy. Mine is not inheredited for I was sick as a child. I was told that you have to have it from birth in order to be hereditary. Sometimes a deficiency runs through the family. We can have seizures from low calcium, magnesium, b complex, low sodium, low blood sugar level. Make sure these were checked out. Check there diet too. I have a daughter who gets twitching, which she is low on magnesium. I have had epilepsy for 36 years and it can be a struggle with epilepsy. But hang in there. take care check out my group. I provide alot of info there and my personal stories are there too. Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/
