My son is new to epilepsy and I"M VERY NERVOUS

Thu, 04/06/2006 - 15:04
Hi. My 4 1/2 year old son was just yesterday diagnosed with childhood absense epilepsy. I have noticed for a while that he at times seems in his own world, or that he doesn't always answer when he is spoken to. But I thought he was just being a typical boy. Then he had an incident at preschool when the teacher said he zoned out for about 1 minute. His faced looked blank, his eyes glazed over. Then he came out of it and he was fine. His ped thought it could be a seizure, and after an EEG, a neurologist diagnosed it as CAE. They would like to put him on zarontin, but I am very nervous doing so because he doesn't really seem that bad to me. Has anyone else struggled with this issue? Should I get a second opinion? Does anyone have a child with CAE who is not being medicated? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I know absolutely nothing about this disorder.

hi,  best thing to do is educate yourself about all the drugs available for the treatment and the drug of choice for treatment, and the type of epilepsy.   one thing i would consider is asking for a consult to a pediatric epiletologist. that is not just a second opinion.  it is the most specialized person available.  The end of the statement about "not doing that bad" must be put together with how long a period of time would it take for him to be injuried from the seizure.  from an injury prospective is the major concern,  the side effects of the medications is also of concern.  there are treatments other than medications that can be discussed.  ie,  the ketogenic diet.  check all the possiblilities.  the one thing that is most important to always remember is that it is your son and no one knows him better than you.  Don't be afraid to ask the questions to all the people you come in contact with.  don't allow medical people to use their language.  if you don't understand make them explain it until you do.  It is not a question of your education, it is a case more than likely of their inability to speak english instead of medical.  hang in there, take a deep breath and get the answers you need so that you can, using medical terms,  make an informed(educated by the person giving you instructions or information) decision.  hope it helps.  rikk

Hi there I cantell you from my experiance that a second opion never hurts> I know that when my daughter was Dx with E. the first nero gave me a Rx that seemed rather strong and was a really high dosage after discussing it with my pharmasist I sought out a second opion and really found that the new Nero listened to us and our concerns and presribed and differt med in a small dose that as far as we can tell is working Even if you go for a second opinion you might get the same advice but in that case it might help put your fears and mind at ease some.
