Carbatrol & Lamictal

Thu, 08/10/2006 - 15:23
I'm looking for information for my 10 year old son. He has recently added a new medication to help control his partial seizures. He is now taking 300 mg Carbatrol and 100 mg Lamictal twice per day. He has been EXTREMELY irritable and aggressive since starting the Carbatrol. I contacted the Dr. earlier, but haven't heard back yet. Just wanted to know if there were others out there experiencing anything similar. I've been doing lots of reading about side effects and have basically found lots of conflicting information. Would appreciate any information anyone may have. Thanks!

Hi! My daughter who is 3 is on Lamictal and I can tell you with out a doubt that she was very moody and irritable when she started taking it..she is only 3 and was on 175 mg a day!! I do not know about Carbatrol though.sorry:( but we are in the process of weaning my daughter off Lamictal all together because of her mood. How long has he been taking both?..it could just be a bad combination. I hope that you get some answers soon it can be hard changing and adding new meds. Best of luck!!!

Hi, I am not a parent of a child with e but I have e. I am on carbatrol 200mg daily and lemictal 400mg daily, I also take phenobarb 150mg daily. I have been in a very bad mood for years before i was taking the lemictal. I was only put on this mixture about 8mos. ago and it works for me and I am putting up with the side effects because it works and nothing else does. I have alot of side effects from the carbitrol like weight gain,headaches,insomenia,irratibility.etc... I also have bad side effects from the mixture I haowever didi not get the weight loss factor from the lemictal. The phenobarb does not help the issue, but if you can get your children off the carbitrol the better off they will be I have issues with my bladder and liver from the tegretol then carbitrol. I am 33 years old and have had seizures since I was 16yrs old and I have these problems now can you imagine what your child's problems will be when he is my age if you keep him on the carbitrol? I really hope that this at least helped a little bit. I like I said am on both of the meds that your son is on but you also have to remember that he is probably starting puberty I know that when my son was his age he was almost impossible to live with and he is not on any meds so maybe that is something to check out oh and it was like it happened overnite he is now 13 and he is still somewhat like that but he is getting better and I think that boys are worse than what I ever thought that they were but it will get better so check that out too, before rushing.

My daughter is 6 and was just recently diagnosed with E. She is on Carbatrol. She has always been moody, but even more so now. Very irritable, rude, mean & impossible! I plan on talking to her neurologist about this when we see him again. I am at my wits end. I hope they can do something!
