1 mo old baby with seizures

Fri, 06/30/2006 - 18:27
Hello. My one month old baby is in the hospital with seizures, he was having them with body movement at home, jerking head back, knees up, arching back. He was admitted into the hospital and put on phenybarbitol, which controlled body movements, but eeg's still show seizure activity in the brain. He is also on Dilantin, and most recently Tropomax, which hasn't had the chance to reach theraputic levels, so far, eeg's still show seizure activity. Plus he is sleeping all the time, probably from meds and seizures. The doctors have ruled out most things, waiting for metabolic tests to come back. Does anyone else have any similar stories? It is so frustrating for them not to be able to get seizures under control.

Sorry to hear about your little one. SOme infants have a deficency in pyrodoxine(B6). Also make sure magnesium, calcium, low sodium, b complex, blood sugar levels are checked. All can cause seizures. I'm sorry to hear about your baby. I know the feelings you are experiencing right now. My son has infantile spasms. Has your child been tested for that yet? Medications are tricky for IS. We have tried many with little help but I have read where ACTH and Topamax as well as phenobarbitol have been sucessful for many children. I wish you and your baby much luck. Thanks for the reply. He is finally home, after 3 weeks in hospital. He is having clinical seizures as well now. Our neurologist says there is some resemblance to infantile spasms, but he would need to wait until our baby was 36 months to give some kind of medication for that, and he wanted to hold off on the ACTH as long as possible, because of the side effects. How old is your son? How long has he been having infantile spasms, and what do his seizures look like?
