Ringing in ears and then seizure

Thu, 01/17/2019 - 22:18
Hi there, I’m trying to figure out what’s going on with me? I’ve had a lot of ringing in the ears, and I thought it was related to blood pressure. But my blood pressure is fine. The other day I was sitting having coffee with my husband, and I was experiencing ringing in the ears so loud as I was discussing something that was stressing me out. Then my husband said all of a sudden I just stopped moving, my head went forward my eyes drooped, and I couldn’t move my body, I couldn’t talk, but I was cognitive of everything around me. My husband said he tried to get me out of it, but I couldn’t do anything. It lasted for about 15 minutes, I was reading fine, shallow breathing, but I focus on my breath so as not to freak out. To be honest I don’t think I could’ve freaked out because I was kind of very distant from everything around me. My husband ended up calling the ambulance, but by the time they got here I was almost back to normal. I went to the emergency room, And of course they had no idea what went on, and even doubted that I was correct in my narrative. They did the basic testing of vitals, and I urge them to refer me to a neurologist. I am currently waiting for a appointment with a neurologist and hopefully will get an MRI. I don’t even know if this is going to show anything. But what I do notice is if I start talking about work and getting stressed ,My ears start ringing louder and louder, to the point it becomes deafening and I start having small deattachment/ seizures, or at least that’s what I’m calling them. I am worried nobody’s going to believe me, and they’re not going to figure out what it is. Does anybody have any idea or have heard of what I am going through? So right now I’m just trying to be per cautious, and just try not to get upset, because I’m scared it will happen again. I’ve had a few short ones, where I get slightly dizzy and then I need to sit down and then I’m just out of it for about a minute or two.

I have had epilepsy and

I have had epilepsy and ringing in my ears all my life.  I have not noticed the ringing in the ears preceding any seizures; it's there pretty much all the time, although it seems worse in winter.  Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) is worsened by increased anxiety.  Increased anxiety also reduces "seizure threshold" meaning it makes a person more vulnerable to having seizures. You may have a predisposition to having seizures and it only takes a little extra stress to set them off.  If you get a neurologist who will listen he/she may send you in for a baseline EEG.  During that test a patient does not even need to have a seizure in order for it to show that the patient is prone to having seizures.  Was that coffee caffeinated?  I don't know if caffeine itself is know to reduce seizure threshold but the anxiety that caffeine stir up may be enough to stir up seizure activity.  I had a bad experience several weeks ago after I drank some hot chocolate from a cappuccino machine.  I drank this stuff many times but that night I experienced an explosive rage where I did harm to myself.  First I thought it may have been due to the new epilepsy drug I was trying (Briviact), but later I wondered how much the caffeine in the drink may have influenced my response.  Since then I have heard others tell of increased reactions to caffeinated coffee.  It's just a thought and not something to get worried about, but do take notice if the tinnitus increases after drinking caffeinated drinks.Mike
