Video EEG/Right Temporal Lobe Resection?

Thu, 12/31/2015 - 02:59

Hi everyone,

I'm a 23 y/o female who has had partial complex seizures for nearly 20 years. My pediatric neuro just referred me to an adult neuro after I've started suffering side effects with meds, no matter which ones we try. The new neuro wants to do surgery, which is something that I never really thought about, because I only have seizures every few years--I'll have 3-4 in a few months, but then not have any more for about four years--but he told me that that's just as bad as someone who has them everyday because they're still technically uncontrolled. I'm having a 4 day video EEG at the hospital next week, where they hope to induce seizures to tell them where exactly the seizures are coming from. He thinks it's the temporal lobe, and if he's right, he wants me to consider a resection surgery.

I'm terrified of the potential risks of the surgery, does anyone else have experience with this? Also, can anyone give me insight into their video EEG experience/purposely induced seizures?

I do. All of them have happened after not sleeping enough, and all but two of them happened within 45 minutes of waking up. I go in Monday morning and am taking full doses of my meds tomorrow, reducing in by 2/3 on Sunday, and then not taking it all on Monday, to increase the likelihood of having a seizure. I already packed a bunch of stuff, probably way too much, I definitely don't want to be stuck staring at the wall. *I went out and bought Monopoly, which probably take the entire 4 days to play.I feel your pain with one steps forward, three back. This is such a hard condition to deal with. My last neuro always used to tell me, "the only predictable thing about epilepsy is that it's unpredictable." Unfortunately, that seems to be true for most of us. I hope things improve with your son's situation, keep us posted!
