Video EEG

Fri, 04/20/2007 - 10:39
We recently met with an epilepologist to look into other options for treating our daughter's epilepsy. She recommended more in depth testing - one of which is the VEEG. We schedule one for the end of Aug. Yesterday, the scheduler called and said they could fit us in next week - 4/23. We have decided to go a head - long story short...I feel like we have no time to research this to learn about what to expect, etc. Is anybody out there willing to share their experience with us. It would be comforting to have an idea of what really happens during these tests. Thanks. Kim

It is really similiar to a regular EEG but now there is a video recording your child which the doc can review while looking at the EEG results. It gives the doc a more complete picture. For the most part, your child will stay in her bed or close to the area so she is in view of the camera (unless of course she has to go to the bathroom). It probably is a much longer test then her initial EEG. My 6 year old daughter (5 at the time) had to stay in the hospital over night and the test lasted 24 hours. I stayed over night with her and we brought lots of games and food. You did not mention how old your child is but there are lots of ways to pass the time. Good luck.

Hi, My daughter thought overall, the VEEG was fun. She did have to stay for 3 days. Plan on anywhere from 1-3 days, depending on what the doctors see. Basically, the sooner they see a seizures, the quicker she can go home. She thought it was great because she got to watch videos, order what she wanted from the cafeteria, play games, and visit with the "seizure dogs" that came by. She got to do all of that without fighting her brother for the t.v. We had friends give her a gift basket full of games, snacks, and activities with really helped. We also worked on school work sent by her teacher. It is pretty much the same as the 20 min. EEG, but longer and on video so they can match what is seen physically, with what is going on with brain waves. It can help them determine better what medication will work best, and if there is increased seizure activity certain times of the day. A parent must stay with her at all times, and you push a button when you start seeing seizure activity so that they can watch and mark it with the EEG. Best of luck, Lori

My daugther has had 2. The second one just last week. She has been having up to 7 seizures a day. The bad thing was that during the test she only had 1. She also had 1 after they unhooked her. Be prepared for that. I was told that she is very rested during the test and that may have been why we didn't see any. But, they were able to look at the test. They noticed that she is at high risk for uncontollable seizures or seizures that are uncontrollable at this point. They also noticed that she has tonic, myoclonic absence, and absence seizures. She did do okay with it. We took lots of things to do. It was very relaxing for her and me.
