Medication concern

Tue, 11/07/2006 - 19:33
My daughter started has partial and generalized seizures starting at the age of 4 that I am aware of. She has been on medication since the age of 5. She is on Lamictal 100 mg and also on Trileptol. She has ADD and is on Daytrana for that. My concern is with her in school. I am a teacher at the same school that she attends. She is failing the system. She is sitting in class having partial seizures and not knowing what to do in class. She is only in first grade and starting to not like school. The medication has not stopped all of them. I am having her placed on a medical IEP to receive extra help in class. I do not know if it is her or if her struggles are the medication or the seizures. I am lost and frustrated!

In the medication insert from Shire, if your child is having active epilepsy episodes, she should discontinue the patch. It has been shown that stimulants can precipitate seizures. You should contact your doctor as soon as possible to let them know about her continued seizures while wearing the patch. Has she tried any other stimulants? Perhaps ones that are short acting drugs? Also, what dose patch is she on, perhaps she can go down in dose to try to minimize the risk of causing seizures. Good luck! I admire you for staying strong through this situation. Don't give up hope or succomb to the frustration! It's extrememly difficult, but you are blessed even though it doesn't seem so.

How long since you have had her reviewed by a neurologist specialising in epilepsy? the reason I ask is that I have found with my daughter there is always a sliding scale of acceptability with side effects vs seizure control. If the medications aren’t controlling her seizures enough to let her learn to her full ability, yet possibly still giving her side effects that are also impacting on her schooling, maybe its time to consider changing medications? I know it can be troublesome, but from my experience it can be worth it. Good luck.
