Daughter with Complex partial seizures_intractable epilepsy_ suggested doctors in the Bay Area

Mon, 02/18/2019 - 01:13
Hello everyone Thank you inadvance for your help and suggestions. My daughter (8 yr old) started having complex partial seizures 9 months ago. She is on Vimpat (225mgs/day) right now and she still gets one seizure per day. Most of her seizures are less than 20sec and some are 40 sec long with arching backwards and fluttering eyes. We tried Keppra, Trileptal, Depakote and Lamictal. All of them increased her seizure frequency except Vimpat. We think Vimpat is working and she needs another medication to stop her seizures completely. It has been a struggle and not a day goes by without crying. Could you please suggest good pediatric epileptogist in the bay area? Also, any other suggestions are most welcom. Thank you.

An epilepsy center would have them, you can search for nearby epilepsy centers at https://www.epilepsy.com/living-epilepsy/find-epilepsy-specialist/find-epilepsy-centerAlso if you are referred to a well regarded pediatric research hospital, they would likely have epileptologists there.

Since she is 8 my guess is a pediatric neurologist who specialized in Epilepsy is best for her.In terms of the bay area? I am on the east coast but according to US News and World Report, a very reliable source in terms of rating hospitals in designated areas, I see three names in LA.There is Children's Hospital Los Angeles, rated number 9 in the United States in Pediatric neurology and neurosurgery; then there is UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, San Francisco and Oakland, rated number 19 in the US; followed by Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford in Palo Alto, rated number 20 in the US, followed by Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, rated number 22; followed by UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital in LA, rated number 23.Here is the link to see hospitals rated in pediatric neurology and neurosurgery. https://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/pediatric-rankings/neurology-and-neurosurgeryIt is very important that when you are selecting a neurologist, make sure they specialize in Epilepsy. Neurology also involves patients with things like Strokes and Parkinson's. In your case you want to make sure you get a name who specialized in Epilepsy.Best Regards

Thank you so very much.
