Temporal Lobe Seizures

Tue, 12/28/2004 - 11:02
Hello. I am new to this site. I was diagnosed with temporal lobe seizures when I was 18. I was prescribed tegretol, which I took until I was about 26. I took myself off of the medication over time, since I was having fewer seizures. I am now 40 and experience a seizure/warning only every few months. I have not been under a doctor's care for many years now. My question is this: even though I have few seizures, are there other "symptoms" attached to this condition that I may have attributed to something else and that medication may help? Any insight would be greatly appreciated...

Molly,

Thankyou! Those are some of the exact symptoms that I have been starting to question -- depression, anxiety, memory, as well as feeling distracted, not being able to handle much at a time, etc. These are all things that could be attributed to my age or stress, but I've always struggled with them. It hasn't been an obvious struggle; rather slight, really. It just seems, sometimes, that life doesn't come as easily to me as it should. Anyway, thank you so much for taking the time to write and share!

                                              Blessings,

                                                   Angie

Molly! That's (your article) the beautiful, and necessary, part of this site. . . so many times you read of others who are experiencing the same things as you are. "Feelings,""parts of life,""characteristics/nuances of epilepsy" that are hard to describe/explain to others (and sometimes ourselves.) "Mental Health" definatly warrants description as much as the "physical characteristics/manifestations" of Epilepsy. We all need to know. I encourage all people/persons who have "Epilepsy" to frequently visit this site, to keep themselves informed, but also importantly, share their experiences with others. Merry Christmas to all, and may the New Year continue to bring us all"Enlightenment!"

Hi Angie!I was diagnosed with E about eight years ago when I was 42. TLE, with both right and left lobe involvement. Interestingly, it took a major Tonic-Clonic seizure (with physical injuries and five days in the hospital) to identify the problem. However, once my wife and I started learning more about this (which we learned VERY fast, I assure you!), a lot of things that I had experienced previously in my life started to fall into place as something very much like CP seizures. These included everything from numbness to occasional dizziness and “fainting,” memory lapses, etc. The whole process also brought back memories of a number of seemingly minor head injuries I had as a child; but in retrospect were probably pretty severe head trauma. In my opinion there are a lot of E symptoms that can be overlooked as just “somethings” when in fact they can be seizure activity. The one sure way to find out, I guess, is to visit your doctor again and try going back on some meds… perhaps having an EEG as well. It's sure a good idea to check it out!Blessings for a wonderful new year and please take care of yourself!gsness
