Trileptal and weight gain

Tue, 05/10/2005 - 10:53
I know that Trileptal is not normally related to weight gain, but I swear that it has made me pack on some pounds.  I'm only on 300 mg/day, and I've been on it for only about 3 months.  Before this, I had no problem keeping excess weight off.  But in these three months I've gained about 7 otherwise unexplainable pounds!  Anyone have any experience with this?

Glad you're feeling better

Glad you're feeling better Rob and hope it continues..sounds like you've found the right 'cocktail' for your E. I find myself craving food on Topamax too,(against the norms) but then I've always been an emotional eater. Also have temporal lobe damage. also go on tangents..a given for TLE's...LOL Does your doc let you drive Rob..I cannot now. I'm going to tuck Trileptal into my file on a sticky note..as I also have spacy partial seizures , (some with declusions/hallucinations,) to suggest if my doc ever wants to start a second med. Best wishes and thanks for sharing.

Hi twin, as a side note, my twin committed suicide because he was diagnosed as being schizophrenic. He just had TLE and tried to describe the hallucinations to the psychiatrist. They put him on Thorazine which was a real mistake. I've had hallucinations too, such as angels and the devil and people following me around. I was so glad when I was able to talk to a neurologist who told me I was OK and not schizo. I've always been grounded in reality, so I never thought I was schizophrenic, although I have been asked by people if I was. I've always been able to drive. I've never had problems with siezures when I drive. I'm not sure why this is. My neuro talked to me about driving and I told him I had no trouble and I'm still driving. Driving seems to having an anti-epilleptic effect. I must be one of the few that has the loss of appetite and weight loss people taking Trileptal. Apart from that, I haven't had the spacey siezure since I've been on the Trileptal. I've still got Deja Vu and Jaime Vu, and if I get Jaime Vu I am going to have a siezure. Once it starts it goes on until I fall asleep for a couple of hours. I'm wondering what's going to happen with my blood work since I crave bannanas. I roll them around in chocolate milk powder and I'm satisfied and I get some chocolate. My graphesthesia really kicks in sometimes, so I have to make myself quit writing. That seems to be the one symptom that remains.

Hi,

I'm a very small person...5'2" and about 98 pounds normally...I was recently put on Keppra (3000mg a day) and after having 3 breakthrough seizures my neuro added Trileptal (600mg a day)..I've noticed a few side effects that have lingered...acne, some weight gain, bloated-ness and constipation..has anyone else experienced this? and if so what did you do to relieve these side effects. I've never had acne like this and never had constipation so I'm at a loss as to what to do...I've tried over the counter remedies and no luck.

I'm about to go in to the epilepsy monitoring unit for 5 days so I'm hoping they will find something while I'm in there and take the trileptal away.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

thanks
