Memory Loss/Side Effects - Lamictal vs. Topomax

Fri, 10/30/2009 - 20:17

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone can tell me their experiences with the side effects of different medicines, particularly Lamictal and Topomax.

I have been on Lamictal for about 2 (going on 3) years now and since then I have had a lot of difficulty with my memory as well as other side effects that I didn't have when I took Tegretol XR. I take 300 mg twice a day of Lamictal.

I really have never felt controlled with Lamictal, have become fairly clumsy, am SUPER tired (moreso than when I was on the Tegretol), have migraines, and NO MEMORY. My short-term memory, especially is VERY bad. I had fogginess and tiredness with Tegretol, but I don't remember it being nearly this bad.

Now, I am having significant auras multiple times a day, every couple days, and had a breakthrough partial complex last week so my neuro and I are talking about switching meds. Apparently the Lamictal levels in my blood are too high and I am showing signs of toxicity b/c of the way I am metabolizing the meds, so increasing my dosage of Lamictal isn't an option. My neurologist suggested putting me on Topomax for control purposes and to help with my migraines which I was totally fine with until I started reading some of the posts here about Topomax.

Topomax sounds. . .scary. I am terrified of switching to a medication that will not only sustain my clumsiness, tiredness, and memory loss, but also increase depression, make my hands tingle, give me extreme weight-loss, etc., etc.! The brain-function issue and the tiredness issue are huge for me. . .I am in the middle of writing my thesis and need all the brain-power I can manage. I am so tired of being tired and like I can't function. While my friends go to work at 7, then exercise afterwards, go out to eat and to a concert all in one day (!). . .I go to work or school and am so tired that I can't do much of anything else. It's terrible. If I am already struggling with that while being on the Lamictal, will Topomax be worse? Now I feel like both medicines aren't good choices for me.

Does anyone have any advice about this? Has anyone out there ever had positive results with Topomax? Is there ANY anti-convulsant that DOESN'T cause such horrible cognitive fogginess and tiredness???

Sorry for such a long post, but any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Was on Topamax for 4 years

Was on Topamax for 4 years for"anxiety"...and couldn't even count in a simple tennis game (however my Golf game became really good! NO stress hormones!!!!). When I went off it eventually I couldn't believe it:, it was like a fog lifted! Saw things clearly again and my memory was back to normal! I will NEVER recommend it! Started on Lamictal for BP depression: Short term memory completely gone. Could not remember one thing from one minute to the next. depression lifted however ver5y nicely! Been on it at 100mg/day for 3 years now and short term memory came back nicely too AFTER I ADDED Omega III (Flaxseed or Fish oil) at 2,000 mg/day. Small studies and anecdotal evidence have shown it help with mode (especially depression in BP patients) and it does. It ALSO helped get my short term memory back! No need to constantly write everything down anymore. Not perfect as I was before, but 10 timers better that w/o. Could help epileptic patients as well possibly?

Good to hear you're doing

Good to hear you're doing well Nadir. Omega 3 is being tried for many things - seems to have lot of health benefits, but research in many areas is lacking. As with any supplements, one would want to make sure they talk to their health care team to make sure there's no interactions with other meds and get the right dose for their situation.

I had brain surgery for

I had brain surgery for epilepsy in 1990 and have been seizure-free. I'm presently taking Lamictol which I've been on for nine years by iteself with Tegretol by itself for about twenty years before that. On the good side, Lamictol has made me much more extroverted which my doctor said might happen, which has helped immensely at my job, but my memory has been very bad. In recent months, I have noticed occasionally periods of time roughly 30-60 minutes when my concentration and ability to interpret data are gone. This is a big problem if I'm in a meeting with my boss (IT security job) and can't understand anything he says. I have compensated to some extent by writing detailed process documents for my team, but even after one-two years of needing to use my own documents, I still have to refer to them which my boss is disapppointed about. The Lamictol has completely controlled my auras and seizures, but I've been worrying about getting dimentia at age 47. I think I'm just making myself worry over nothing, but I can't help thinking that the increased frequency of concentration issues might result in some type of mental illness.
