Has anyone been taking Neurontin

Mon, 06/13/2005 - 18:47
I am also new to this site, and like to welcome any new feedbacks on neurontin. My husband acquired severe brain damage from a work accident. The first year he was having seizures and no doctors found out till after the second year from his accident. I myself his wife really did not know what a seizure was. They first put him on neurontin, then took him off and put him on Dilantin. His white cell count was very low. Now they have put him back on neurontin because of what they said is low side effects. He was still getting seizures when he does get sick. I have notice he does drool alot on this medicine. My question is anyone out there feel drowsey, or stomack upsets from this medicine. Please reply your experience since my husband lost his speech and really cannot tell me if anything bothers him. Any feedback will be greatly appreiciated. Alina Higgins

I take Neurontin (1800 mgs per day) and Dilantin (400 mgs per day.)  I do get drowsy after taking my meds, but that is the only side effects I have noticed.  I have been taking this combination since 1999.  I recently had an episode of shingle on my face and the doctor told me the pain would have been unbearable had I not been taking Neurontin (I was told this by two doctors, my pharmacist and nurse practitioner.  The pain did get excruciating when the virus got into my right eye (this was the third time I've had it in my eye.)  I do know it is prescribed as a migraine medication, because my daughter-in-law took it until she became pregnant.  One drawback to taking Dilantin is a tendency to have gum problems, so, you have to see a dentist frequently (I have failed miserably in this due to lack of money.)  You also have to have blood work (Dilantin trough) done on a regular basis because of its possible effect on your liver.

God bless you,

Marjie

Ms. Higgins, sorry to hear about your husband. I took Neurontin for about 10 years. My seizures stopped being controlled by it.I thought that all seizure meds made you sleepy.I assumed that was the way I would always feel until I has a grand mal after 20 years of having seizures and went to a new neuro. and was changed from Neurontin to Lamictal and now have to take sleep meds, but that is so much better than feeling tired, confused, crazy and foggy all the time, from the time a woke up until I closed my eyes at night. I never had stomach upsets with Neur. Good luck hope he gets better.
