Dilantin 30 Mg capsules

Sat, 01/15/2011 - 00:45
Has anyone else changed from the older Dilantin Kapseals ( white with band in middle)  to the newer Dilantin capsules, either the 100 mg or 30 mg capsule?  Did you have any side effects or increase in seizures after the change? Did you take precautions like avoiding driving after the switch, frequent blood monitoring?  If so, for how long? I have taken Dilantin for 20 years.  It was prescribed after I had a  focal seizure. I also had a grand mal seizure as a child and untreated seizures as an infant. When the 100 mg Kapseals were no longer available I switched to the 30 mg Kapseals and have been taking seven each night.  Now those are no longer available and I must switch to the newer 30 mg capsule ( half pink, half white) soon. I am very scared because I read that it might be absorbed differently causing seizures. I have not had a seizure since starting Dilantin and I drive everyday.  I would love to hear from others what their experience has been, both good and bad.  Thank you.

Hi T                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       I  I switched to the new Dilantin last Thursday and I feel fine!   It was really helpful knowing that you had no problems with it although you are sensitive to changes.  Now I can go on and address other issues.                                                                                                                                                               Thanks again!                                                                                                                                                     Joanne

Hi Joanne, I'm glad you're feeling well with the new Dilantin.  BTW, did you ever call Billl Stack at the EFNC?  I saw him Thursday night (at the monthly support group meeting) and asked him if he'd heard from you.  He said that he didn't but that (John?) helped you.

I hope there is an Epilepsy Support Group near your area.  Take care of yourself!

Hi T,                                                                                                                                                                  Yes,  I spoke to Bill Stack at EFNC about a week ago.  I think it was on Friday , Feb. 4.  He told me that he had not heard of any problems with the new Dilantin.  He was very helpful and reminded me that the statistical probability of my having problems with it is very low and my anxiety is actually more likely to cause seizures.  He also said that having epilepsy can  contribute to anxiety and that cognitive behavioral therapy can be helpful. He encouraged me to attend the support group and I plan to attend the one in Walnut Creek because I am familiar with the drive there. Thanks for encouraging me to call him and to be more proactive about having my concerns addressed. Hope you are doing well!
