Can Drop Seizures suddenly appear?

Sat, 07/02/2005 - 21:37

Am 35 , have been dealing with seizures since teen years.  Recently switched from Tegrotol to Trileptal a couple weeks ago.  Had an episode while stenuously working out...passed out suddenly and fractured my orbital.  Didn't bite my tongue or feel the urge to go to the bathroom prior to the episode...can it be possible I had a drop seizure for the first time?

Hi Marko,

From all I've read on this site I would say many people experience exactly what you described. I think it's as Nancy said that if this feeling precedes a T/C seizure it it called an 'aura' (warning) but on its own its known as a 'simple partial seizure'.

My son is now 21yo. Since he was about 8yo he has described this feeling, that so many have mentioned, of not being able to move or respond even though you can hear what is going on around you, 'you feel far away and you just have to wait til "it" goes".

Yes, some types of seizures can change over the course of your lifetime, but only in a known specific grouping. Usually that occurs typically in people who have various single types of seizures alone, not in collections associated with E syndromes. For Example someone with Absence as a child remits in their mid to late teens, and in their early adulthood develop Grand Mal seizures. That is one of the most common types of changes seen in people with epilepsy. 80% of people who have Absences also have TCs later in life. I forgot where I found that tid-bit.Sometimes people who have Myocclonics will also have either Atonic or Clonics later or concommittently with. People with Partial Epilepsy will always have either SP, CP or SGTC all together or in some combo of. Most people with Partial Epilepsy have CPs (80%). Auras are described as odd feelings or sensations that are felt at the onset of a seizure and allow the person to find safety. Here is the defination that most epis and neuros use for the aura. An aura is referred to as an aura ONLY if something bigger follows it such as a CP or a SGTC. If just the aura occurs and nothing else, then it is said to be a SP. Take me for example, I was originally diagnosed with Absences after a lifetime of hell in school, and jerks that got worse as I got older. I wet the bed until I was 15 years old. Then when I was in the EMU last March, they caught other things that pointed to JME, and that is what theysaid I had. Then 6 months ago, it got changed to just Grand Mal Epilepsy. Tell me where JME can be recalled to GME (Grand Mal Epilepsy)? I still have jerks that are moderate, but don't happen all the time, and my Absences are mostly controlled, but the T/Cs aren't.I still have all the same triggers as JME does-- lack of sleep, fatigue, early wakening, over exertion, hyperventilation, missed AEDs, Menses (when they show up), illnesses, stress etc.Nancy
