VNS Horror Story

Tue, 01/08/2008 - 16:44

I was diagnosed with epilepsy 16 years ago at the age of 34. My seizures have never been controlled with medications. Due to multiple focal points I didn't qualify for brain surgery. My neurologist suggested the VNS and I decided to give it a shot. I had the surgery on 7/21/00. The device never helped my condition but I didn't regret my decision to try it, that is until 7/02/06 when the device nearly killed me. On that date I started having what I thought were atonic seizures (I know better now). The episodes began with a sudden sharp pain to the throat followed by a split second of choking and then 30 seconds of unconsciousness. I never had atonics before and thought the throat pain/choking were just a strange kind of aura. My parents happened to stop by that sunday morning for a visit. They realized something was terribly wrong and called my neuro and EMS. My last memory of that morning was being inside of an ambulance. The next thing I remember was waking up in the ICU. What was actually happening is the device was stopping my heart (asystole) during the 30 second on cycles. Once my neuro realized that the problem was cardiac and not seizure activity he had to rush to his office to retrieve the equipment to deactivate the VNS. Once the device was turned off I regained a normal heart beat and have never had another "atonic" since. My VNS was programmed at 30 sec/3 min and I experienced approx 40 episodes of asystole. It's a miracle that I survived that ordeal.

... from getting the vns. it is 50% chance of working on uncontrolable siezures when all else has failed. ...

This is not correct. Cyberonics says:

... The long-term impact of VNS Therapy was assessed in an open-label, long-term study of 454 epilepsy patients using data from all 5 VNS Therapy controlled, clinical trials. The study compared the percentage of patients with seizure reductions of >= 50% over a 3-year period. The percentage of patients with >= 50% seizure reduction was 36.8 at 1 year, 43.2 at 2 years, and 42.7 at 3 years. ...

VNS efficacy chart

Long-term Seizure Control with VNS Therapy™

There are other alternatives to the VNS (EEG neurofeedback, neurobehavioral therapy, LGIT diet, Modified Atkins diet and the Ketogenic diet for example) that studies have indicated are more efficacious and which have much fewer and less severe potential adverse events.

MY DAUGHTER HAD THE VNS IMPLANTED ON 01-20-10. SHE WENT TO HER NEUROLOGIST ON 02-10-10 AND HAD IT TURNED ON....... ON 02-18-10, SHE DIED!! JUST 8 DAYS AFTER HAVING THE UNIT "POWERED UP" I WANT ANSWERS. SHE WAS MY BEST FRIEND AND A MOTHER OF TWO BABY BOYS, WHO ARE NOW SEPARATED AND HAVE NO MOTHER. I CANNOT BEGIN TO DESCRIBE THE GRIEF, THE SUFFERING, THE ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE THAT, ALL WHO KNEW HER, ARE LIVING! THE MEDICAL EXAMINER REMOVED LEANNA'S VNS AND SENT IT TO "THE MANUFACTURER" FOR DIAGNOSTICS. I HAVE YET TO HEAR FROM THE COMPANY THAT I BELIEVE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HER DEATH. THIS DEVISE SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE MARKET IMMEDIATELY. I DO NOT CARE HOW MANY HAVE BENEFITED FROM IT, NO AMOUNT OF SUCCESS STORIES WILL BRING MY DAUGHTER BACK. WE WERE NEVER EVEN TOLD THAT A RISK OF DEATH EXISTED.

Nancy B   My sister almost died after having the Cyberonics VNS device implanted to treat her seizure disorder. She spent almost an entire year in the hospital because of it, twice put on life support, and is now permanetly disabled because of it. You need to contact the FDA and write them a letter and tell them exactly what happened. Do not wait for Cyberonics to do anything for you. They have recieved several warning letters from the FDA for not properly investigating deaths they were aware of and I wouldn't trust them with anything. If you go to the Maude Data Base you can look up the injuries and the deaths that this device has caused or been involved with.  When you log onto the Maude Data Base, on the main page there will be a 'search bar' in the upper right hand corner. Into that, type in: death caused by Cyberonics Vns device' and when that page comes up, I believe results 1-4 are there, but at the bottom of the page where it says: 'Repeat search with ommitted items included' hit on that, and you'll see there are many. You should also pull up the warning letters that they have recieved. That is also available on that site. An example of one is: Ref:2005-DAL-WL-7  and part of that letter says: 'Failure to completely investigate and evaluate the cause of each medical adverse event as required by CFR 803.50 [b][2] and failure to maintain complete deliberation results as required by CFR 803.18 [b][1][i] {FDA-483, Item 1}. For example, your firm has not provided adequate documentation of deliberations to support your firm's decision making process for explaining why your firm could not reach a conclusion about the cause of [a] device migration reported in complaint file # 20306-0477 [reference MDR report # 2003-00402]; and [b] high lead impedance, device migration, increase in seizures, and SUBSEQUENT PATIENT DEATH reported in complaint file # 2003-0567 [reference MDR report # 2004-00030] Another thing I strongly suggest is contacting your local newspaper and let them know what happened. Too much is being burried and people have a right to hear the truth. Contact any and all news sources that you can get your hands on. Maybe you could even get someone who has no ties to this company to investigate your child's death. If it is any comfort to you at all, know that you will be in my prayers. I am truly very sorry for your loss.   Nancy B, Judy's sister
