Sleep Deprivation Grand Mal Seizures?

I suffered a grand mal seizure a year ago, and following all the tests over the next six months, was diagnosed not to be epileptic. The diagnosis was clearly a relief but yet I'd still had a full on spell where I was out for at least twenty minutes and only due to a passerby suffered no injury with no reason why other than I should get more sleep.

 

I never looked at any of these sites as I was not diagnosed with epilepsy just a single seizure. I've found from looking at these sites that there is a huge amount support available and that some people who have had a single seizure as a result of sleep deprivation are actually put on medication (which sounds pretty tough going - respect to all of you who are on it and who you are around it - you are all so kind and compassionate)

 

Without an epilepsy diagnosis, I felt a bit at a loss how to proceed and terrified that I would get another one - I've mostly gone around scared of not getting enough sleep and taking on too much.

 

Would there be anyone who would like to get in touch around creating something around looking at ways of putting balance back into life? Was thinking of a practical site (or community within a site) with alternatives to getting into a healthy sleep pattern, courses etc where you can re-assess life and why you get stressed/keep so busy/staying in a job situation that's bad for your health, getting back on the road after not driving for xx months / years etc. For some people it might even be making the changes to enable you to come off the drugs.

I'm not a specialist on meditation, but I can tell you how I sometimes make myself slow down. 

You exercise, do you do the warm up breathing and cool down?  You know, legs apart, knees bent, arms loose in front then inhale as you bring your hands above your head and slowly exhale when bringing them down.  This makes you aware of your breathing and heart rate.  Do this a few times to slow any of that down or just to give yourself more oxygen.

Now close your eyes and visualize something of ordinary motion.  Waves coming to shore, flowers bending in the wind, clouds moving across the sky, the list can be endless.  Whatever you chose it should be pleasant to you and not something that will require thinking of situations.  Wind is not good if you need to worry about the weather at the moment.

Music of certain types can help, depending if you just wish to relax or sleep.  There are some types of music I enjoy but cannot listen to when my mind is running too fast.

When my muscles are too tense, sometimes I will swicth from the motion to say my shoulder and force it to let go.  Sometimes it helps to shake it out, sometimes a visual ripple like tossing a sheet across the bed in slow motion.

You'll find what works for you.  Sometimes its a ongoing thought like writting a story as I sit somewhere waiting on something and I know I'm tense.  If I really ever wrote it down who knows?  I might get famous (ha, ha LOL).

Hi Diane, Have you tried any type of medication for the lack of sleep? I have been suffering from it only recently and it feels awful. Sam

I also just had a new seizure(my second seizure in 15 years, so I will call it new.)

My Doc never asked about sleep deprivation or any other cause, but she started me on Keppra. I'm hoping to not get a diagnosis of epilepsy. How did you r Doc decide you don't have eplilepsy?
