Keppra & extreme exhaustion

Mon, 03/23/2020 - 12:06
Hi guys! I've been dating my boyfriend for almost two years now and he is epileptic; I'm here to find more info on how you all go about dealing with the side effects of your epilepsy meds. He takes 1500 mg of Keppra every morning (500 mg x3). He works in construction and operates heavy machinery as long as he takes his medication consistently and daily. If he misses a dosage, he may be susceptible to a petit mal or on a rare occasion, a grand mal seizure. Also, excessive stress is a big trigger for his petit mal seizures, which is kind of an ongoing issue considering he has a very short temper. He has made it a point to calm down and let things go a little more easily, reducing the frequency of his petit mal seizures. However, he is always drained and exhausted no matter how much sleep he gets (which usually is between 8-12 hours). His doctor said this chronic exhaustion is a side effect of Keppra. So my question is, do any of you deal with this side effect as well? If so, how do you deal with the drowsiness on a daily basis? Did your doctor recommend something to take to counteract it or a change in lifestyle? Thank you in advance!!

hey AlexI never would have believed that yoga could also help as much as it does which really illustrates how important you state of mind is if youre epileptic.  The reason that yoga works is because there is a lot of deep breathing which is very calming.  heres the psych behind it - When you conciously take a nice deep breath your subconcious automatically tells your brain to calm down, thats all it is.  So everybody reading this, conciously practise taking deep breaths evey now and then during your day...espcially if you have a stressed life style. If you feel a seizure coming on then start breathing.  Ive had thousands of seizures since 1996 and the breathing "trick" has really reduced my seizures, only took 20 years to figure it out lol.  you should cut down to zero cups of coffee/tea bro, all stimulants are potential triggers.

Hi ive been on many different

Hi ive been on many different meds and all of them make me tired.  keppra works quite well for me but also always very tired, 10 hours sleep make just zero difference. had thousands of petit mal and quite a few grand mal seizures (bike smash 1996). Stress and anxiety is without a doubt is a very powerful trigger.  This might sound weird but tell your man to get into the habbit of taking a few deep breaths throughout  the day.  It sounds stupid but I researched it  and the science behind it is this...When you conciously take a deep breath your subconsious automatically tells your brain to calm down.  I've tested it out so many times now.  If I feel a seizure coming on I breathe deeply and it helps a lot, it has even made a few seizures go away completely, which has never happened to me before.  Google "breathing excercises", its a really cool "trick".  It will definitely help him especially if he gets angry easily (anxiety is often a side effect of aed meds as well unfortunately).   Deep breathing reduces anxiety and stress...and its free, only took me 20 years to figure it out lol.  I know everyone is different but the science is the same.  Coming back to Keppra and fatigue, most anti seizure meds are basically designed to reduce electrical activity in your brain which makes many people sleepy, thats the nasty truth unfortunately...but remember this - state of mind is just as important as diet and staying hydrated.  just for interest sake, I watched a forward that I got on my mobile phone the other day, its this indian man telling a story called "The tenth apple effect"...it changed my outlook on lots of things, it was a very calming and I would like to share it.  its only about 5 minutes long.  see link below.  all the best!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MikME_FU4I
