Flashing Lights In Grocery Stores

Thu, 03/08/2007 - 20:52
I don't have epilepsy. I have a severely debilitating migraine problem. One of my triggers is flashing lights. All my local grocery stores have recently installed these little coupon dispensers with little red flashing lights on them. Something about the way the flashes are spaced so far apart or at random makes these things the worst migraine trigger I have ever encountered. I was wondering if any of you are having seizure trouble with these things as well, and have any ideas about what can be done about it. I have been complaining to all the local general managers and emailing some of the grocery store corporate offices about my problem, but so far nobody seems to care about one person who can no longer go into their grocery stores because of something so stupid and unneccesary as a coupon dispenser. Now my poor husband who is already too busy with work has to take over the grocery shopping.

I started out not having epilepsy, but suffered severe migraines since I was 13, and I am now 32. I get migraines at least 3-4 a week and if I'm lucky one a week. The worst one I had lasted 3 days and I went to the hospital hoping to be knocked out, and unfortunately the meds didn't, and the headache lasted another 2 hours after the shots. I have however developed myoclonic seizures since just recently and have always had problems with lights. If I'm going down the road and the light reflects hard off of a vehicle's mirror, it can triggor a mirgraine for me. Hazy days are bad for me because of the lighting, and hospital lights are hideous on my eyes. I can't do the computer for long periods of time, I had my first myoclonic experience on my laptop, and the movie theatre gives me problems too. Ambulance lights, cop car lights, and obviously fire truck lights can trigger migraines and myoclonic episodes for me, so I sympathize with you. Some medications can help cut dowm on light sensitivity especially if you suffer migraines. Have you tried Zonegran? You have to take it everyday, but it helps. It is an epilepsy pill, but many neurologists are starting to treat migraine sufferers with epiliepsy meds. I also take relpax along with Zonegran. You must be very sensitive with light. Don't feel bad I am too.
