Insurance/medicare

Mon, 01/16/2006 - 11:22
Hi, I used to be on a cobra policy from my place of work. Now the policy is reduced to cover a family plan. Yet. medicare does not cover a lot of what the old plan did. For instance, phenobarbitol is no longer covered.

Medicare approved Part D plans don't cover phenobarbital or benzodiazepines, generally. However, some plans may cover generic versions. People who qualify for state medicaid, may get cost of these drugs covered by Medicaid. Some patient assistance programs of pharmaceutical companies may help, however, cost of plain phenobarbital is usually low enough that it may not be included in these plans. Other option - doctors can ask for exception to coverage if a drug is only one or best one to treat the seizures. Pharmacies are also supposed to provide emergency supplies to last until changes in plans and meds can be worked out. Good to do homework and visit the www.medicare.gov site to check out all the plans to find the best one to meet your needs. Good luck ! Epilepsy.com Resource Specialist
