Insurance Change!

Mon, 10/01/2007 - 20:24
Our insurance is changing. And has decided that it's generic or nothing. When my mother approached an insurance rep. the lady simply said "well if she has a seizure, just don't tell anyone!" HAHAHA. Riiiiggghhhtt. Has anyone else ever had problems like this? Did you fight it? How? My doctor does not want me to switch to generics. I'm happy on Zonegran, and haven't had a seizure in a while. Any advice?

Definitely contact your state's insurance board or insurance commissioner and get them involved. I would also talk to your Dr. and ask for his/her assistance -- I know my neurologist doesn't believe in generic AED's and won't prescribe them unless he has a patient without insurance who can't get them any other way. I would also go above the head of the insurance rep who made such a flippant comment to you. It is possible that she just doesn't know what she is talking about.

I actually went thru this with my insurance a couple of years ago with my meds for GERD. My Gastro-Enterologist prescribed a drug and the insurance wanted me to take a generic, they sent the doc some paperwork and the doc stuck to his original decision and the insurance company covered the drug the doc wanted. Hopefully, if your doc will get involved, they will cover the Zonegran for you.
