seizures and low heart rate

Tue, 05/10/2005 - 06:34

Hi, I was at the doctors in Feb. for an EEG , and as usual they had me hooked up to a heart monitor.  They had the monitor set for 60 beats.  I am a 23 yr. old female, and they would say to me that my rate should be from 70 to 100 a min.  So, any time it would hit 60 or below, it would go off and the doc.s would come in and make sure I'm alive and all that.  Well, come to find out, the time I was there my usual rate was anywhere from 30 to 50.  WHich they said is really low.  They said if I was an old woman they would have given me a pace maker on the spot.  Last week they set me up with one of those monitors to take home over the night to see what was going on.  Is this maybe usual for someone being on three different seizure med.s you think?  Cause it kind of bothers me a bit when it comes to my heart, know what I mean?  I'd rather it be...I don't know somethin' else.  If you could give me any info. that would be great.  Oh, and they haven't let me know yet about my monitoring last.  We'll find out, I guess.  Thanks a bunch and take care,

Hi.... I was monitored overnight in the hosptial a couple of weeks ago for the same thing... my heart rate was too low (below 50 BPM.. but I heard the nurse say at first it was jumping all over the place...

Heart rate variations are common with seizures.  My research informed me that Bracytardia (low heart rate) and Tacycardia (high heart rate) is a well established phenomenon occurring often in seizures.... either before, during and/or after in any combo...  Guess my heart rate went back to the norm cause they let me go with the advice to follow-up with my doctors.   I had gone to the ER thinking I was having a mini-stroke or... possibly a seizure but wasn't sure... now feel was a seizure...

Yeah... it's definitely a bit disconcerting when your heart gets involved.   I don't know about the meds combo but I hope it gets worked out to the best for you...!  =)

I have only just found this link, I know it is old but I'm soooooooo pleased to have found some others with the same thing, thanks for the info. My docs here in Spain just looked at me as if I was going mental. Now I am armed with the right info I will be sticking it to them, I have been uncontrolled for 5 years with bradycardia that I can actually feel and it's very unpleasant, wondering if ur heart is going to carry on at 3 in the morning! Thanks again!

Just released from Hospital. My heart rate also drops really low at times and I was told it is seizure related. I also have Non sustained polymorphic VT once in a while, and very low blood pressure that likes to hover around 85/55 and drop into the 70's over 40's,as a result of epileptic activity. What is really scary is when I have a siezure that cause me to lose the ability to breath. No air in, no air out. Last about 20 sec. I was put on zonisamide, beta blocker, and a med to raise blood pressure. What meds are you on?
