Painful night episodes - seizures?

Thu, 03/01/2018 - 16:42
Hello everyone. I need advice on if this resembles anything you have experienced or if these episodes sound like seizures. For the last couple of years, I have been having very painful episodes that occur only at night. They wake me from my sleep. They are generally triggered during a dream state, because I often am aware in my dream that an episode is imminent prior to it actually starting. They seem to come out of nowhere - not triggered by any specific dream sequence; I just become aware that it is going to happen. There is a brief moment of acknowledgment, like a building sensation, and then I have a very neurological wave of symptoms that lasts approximately 20-60 seconds. It starts with a sensation of being terribly chilled- like a very strong whole body deep shiver but then turns immediately to pain that feels like a million pins all through my skin and body. The pain becomes very intense and I can feel my muscles are tensed to the max. Sometimes there are strange neurological sensations along with it, like a strong urge to itch my tongue or the roof of my mouth. I can move during the episode but it is very painful. Afterward, my whole body just aches and sometimes I have a headache. (I have diagnoses of connective tissue disorders with dysautonomia already.) I often do think that I am cold afterwards; I feel as if I need to pile blankets on but within 10 seconds I realize that is incorrect because I am immediately overheated. So, it is more like there is a message of "cold" being sent when my body is not actually chilled. I saw a neurologist once and mentioned these episodes and his response was "Do you want to try an anti-seizure med?" I declined because I found his lack of explanation unsettling and didn't want to start on a major med without knowing what is behind these episodes. Thanks in advance for advice and opinions - LifeofCass
