How do you know what your Diagnoses is?

Hi. I am trying to figure out what the difference between Epilepsy and a Seizure Disorder is. My first Neurologist has referred me on to another doctor that specializes in Seizures because she can not figure out my case. I called today and the Nurse told me my case was Difficult. I am still having seizure while I am on the seizure medication. I take 1200mg of Tegretol a day and 400mg of Topamax a day. I still get seizures. I think she thinks I am making them up. When I did the EEG it came back normal. I didn't fall asleep for the test, I need sleeping medication to help me sleep and they did not give me any to help me sleep. They have told me I have a Seizure Disorder but does that qualify as Epilepsy? I have to wait to see what this new Seizure Doctor says. I hate being pushed around from Dr. to Dr. I have been seeing the first dr. for a good couple of years, and now she is finally referring me on. I had to have a Grand Mal before she believe I was having seizures. (I have complex Partials) Leah

Hi. As far as I know a seizure disorder and epilepsy are the same thing. Epilepsy is a greek word meaning tendancy to seize. Personally, I say I have a seizure disorder if I am unsure how the person I am telling will react. When I say seizure disorder people usually just ask what's it like and are you OK. When I say epilepsy some people will ask more serious questions like is it fatal or you seem so normal. Most people are so unaware of what epilepsy really is and that most of us live a good life(other than the meds and Drs.) People think of a seizure as "flopping around like fish out of water" when really it can happen right in front of their own eyes and they don't even have a clue as to whats happening. The best thing to do is to educate as many people as you can. I have even given friendss and family books and brochures on epilepsy and after reading them they may say "wow I had know idea it is like that". As far as the Drs. go keep trying different ones until you find the right one for you. It took me four before I found the right one. If you live around Detroit and can give you his name.
